Recent Junkanoo Beach and Nassau experiences?

Has anyone walked over to Junkanoo Beach from the port recently in Nassau? How was your experience? Did you feel safe? We are in port on a rare day where we are the only ship. We'd like to get off and do something but not sure what! It's also going to be January so didn't want to pay for a beach excursion or water/boat type excursion in case it's chilly. Yes, we know many stay on the ship but we have had good Nassau days in the past and we'd like to get off even if just for a few hours. Is there enough to see/do right there in the renovated port area?
