Were they still stopping you at the garage entrance and not letting you pass until you show them your check in bar code?
Wondering if we'd have luck getting a minivan in the full-size aisle

In September, we were asked near the booth, where he then directed us to the row we could choose from. We had a mid-size SUV and there was one minivan in the section. So you could get lucky and get one.

We had the minivan row and we had over a dozen to choose from.
After I checked with the first office in the garage I went to the row picked out then drove to the check out booth and they checked our barcode and asked for our flight info.
If they did not have a van we were going to use turo

We rented a car last week and walked right to the cars without being stopped. We simply checked out at the booth as usual.
