Wanting to help a friend and transfer points to her from my use year to use in May. (My use year is March.) She wants to then transfer the same number of points back to me in August 2013 (her use year is August.) Does anyone know if I would then be required to use the points transferred to me by March 1st (my use year) or would they be bankable. OR would they follow my friend's use year and have to be used by August 2014 or be banked following her banking guidelines???? Help please!!!

:scared:

Points transferred in retain their original home resort and UY and can be banked (but not borrowed).

Be aware that transfers are limited to one per Use Year - either in or out.

If you are transferring your March, 2012 points to your friend then you could accept a transfer of her August, 2013 points at any time (no need to wait until August).

However, if you transfer points from your March, 2013 Use Year to another member, you cannot accept points from another 2013 Use Year. She would need to transfer points to you from her August, 2014 Use Year and would need to wait until after August 1 to do that.

Transfers may be made from the current and next Use Year. At this time you are both in your 2012 Use Year and may transfer current (unbanked/unborrowed) points to another member's 2012 Use Year - where they may be banked. If you wait until March 1, 2013 to transfer points to her, you could not accept a transfer of 2013 points into your account.

As noted by ErionM, transferred points will retain their original Home Resort and Use Year (month) status. They can be banked but cannot be borrowed.

From what you state, you are transferring March 2013 points (it is impossible right now to transfer March 2012 points for use in May 2013) and then intend to get back August 2013 points. You cannot do that because the second transfer will not be allowed. You would both use up your one transfer per use year, either in or out, by the first transfer of the March 2013 points. For any allowed transfer, points retain both their original use year and home resort and thus if Aug points were to be transferred they would remain in their Aug 1 to July 31 use year for the purpose of using them. Once transferred they can be banked but not borrowed.

Yeah, Your 2012 points would do them no good as they will expire this month and are beyond the banking deadline. You would have to transfer her your 2013 points, and she transfer you back 2014 points to work. That would work if she is out of 2012 points. My question is why wouldn't she just borrow her own points? Unless maybe she has a 2013 trip planned but not 2014? Or is she out of 2013 to borrow? Anything else wouldn't make sense, as the 11 month booking advantage of your points is not going to help her for May.

Have you ever gone to a thread, with full intent of understanding what it says, and it just doesn't sink it (no matter how many times you've read it)?!!

I'm totally lost on this one... my brain can't comprehend all the ins and outs after a long day!

The transfer rules allow you to transfer points from your account into another's once per use year, or alternatively transfer from the other's account into yours once per use year. You cannot both transfer out and receive in points in the same use year because that would be two transfer transactions. The OP wants to transfer March 2013 points and then later get back Aug 2013 points from the other member. That would constitute two transfers during the OPs 2013 use year and thus prohibited.

You can in fact do two transfers in one calendar year as long as you do different use years. Example, the OP could transfer 2013 points into someone's 2013 use year and get back into the OPs 2014 use year 2014 points from that person's 2014 use year because for each of them that would still be one transfer per use year.

The mention above about possibly transferring March 2012 points was considering that possibility. The OP could transfer March 2012 points into the other's Aug 2012 use year and take back Aug 2013 points for the OPs March 2013 year. But that transaction is currently impossible if the friend wants a May 2013 trip. March 2012 points transferred today would have to be used by end of Feb 2013 because they cannot be banked since the banking deadline ended October 31, 2012.

Perfect explanation

Have a related question about transferring points - if you have multiple DVC contracts, are they each allowed one transfer per UY? or is it one transfer per UY for each owner/account?

thanks

One per member or membership. MS has in the past let members transfer between memberships under the same ownership.

FYI - transfered points don't show up online and in my experience, MS has trouble using them so keep good records.
