I'm considering buying a Rebel XT, body only and picking up a lens separately. Can someone suggest a good (reasonably priced) starter lens?

Actually, the 18-55 kit lens is a very good starter lens, for less $$$ than almost any other lens. Another lens most people would recommend is the 50 mm f/1.8, for about $80.

I second the vote for the kit lens as a good starter lens. Use it for a while and then decide if you want something longer, wider, faster, etc.

Another suggestion is the Sigma 18-125.... it runs about $300 or so give you much more reach and is my regular walk around lens.

if you do buy the kit lens check out ebay. i got one for $60 in excellent condition..not sure if keh.com would have them ( i was just drooling over their longer zoom canon lens but didn't notice) it seems lots sell them pretty quick:confused3 ..i used it yesterday and was happy with the photos( usually use 28-135 IS canon)
second the 50mm1.8 also nice lens and inexpensive although not really all purpose you could get those 2 for under $200 total and the 50 gives you the larger aperture ( kit lens is f3.5-5.6)
