As previously posted, we've just booked flights with Delta via Atlanta. Was speaking to a friend on Friday night who had experienced a 24 hour delay at Chicago when her flight from the UK was delayed and the onward flight to Orlando missed.

I wonder how often this happens as I never considered this possibility when booking. Thinking that as we only have 2hrs 20 minutes to change at Atlanta (an hour less on the way back - but we don't care about that!), this could be a real possibility. Are Delata obliged to get us on the next available flight? - hopefully due to the proximity of Atlanta and Orlando I am thinking that flights will be pretty frequent anyway.

I think you are right about the proximity being an advantage here. We flew Delta in October 1999. There seem to be several shuttle flights to Orlando in a day, and as far as I could make out they have capacity for last minute bookings.

Our flight from Atlanta to MCO was a bit delayed because of computer trouble (airport, not plane) and when it came back on they were doing everything they could to sort people out. There were many, many Americans just turning up for the next available flight as you might do for a train.

Check out the Delta and/or Atlanta airport websites to see the schedule to put your mind at rest.

We flew Delta last November - I had the same concerns, particularly as I knew the flight was full from Atlanta to Orlando.

However I looked further and there were 2 more Delta flights to Orlando the same day after ours, and several to both Tampa and Miami as well (which I would have gone on and driven to Orlando if necessary). As it was there was no problem and we caught the flight in plenty of time.

I did try and reserve seats ahead of time - this bit didn't work so well and we ended up in completely different places to where I had selected. From Atlanta to Orlando I was sat apart from DW. We weren't the only ones that this had happened to, 1 group of 3 adults and 7/8 children all ended up with individual seats scattered around the plane!! A swift bit of common sense and everyone helping out on the plane sorted this out but it was chaos for a while.
