Reasonable price for used bread machine?

While yard saling with my SIL this summer, I spotted a bread machine and wanted to buy it. She said, "I have one you can use any time." So, I didn't get the bread machine. I call tonight and ask to borrow it and she says, "Oh, we sold that in our yard sale." Hmmmm....would have been nice to know!

So, my question to my DIS budget friends is: What is a reasonable price to pay for a used bread machine? I'm going to start scouting Goodwill and second hand shops. I don't want to pay new prices since I don't know yet how often I'll use it. I know Amazon has a new Sunbeam one for $36, and Walmart had one for $39. What's a reasonable price for a used one, though?

Thanks for any help!

Kim

Personally, I wouldn't go over $10. That is one of those things I don't like buying used unless it's from someone I know because you never know what they did with it. I just don't want to be out the money if it doesn't work right.

I think that item is one you either love or never use. Mine is just sitting in the basement, but I got it for free from dh's grandma who never used it! Might need to bring it up for our garage sale this year!

I just bought a brand new one from a divorce sale for $10. I love it! I only use it to make dough then I shape and bake it in the oven.

I agree that I'd be wary of buying one used. I've had the motors slow down. It's one of those appliances that do break.

I loved having one for a couple years, but then I lost interest. My mother still uses hers, though.

Even so, I still remember that wonderful fresh bread smell and the bread still warm that had a crisp crust yet chewy in the middle. And it was so easy just to dump the stuff in and let it mix and cook.

My sister sold hers (used twice) with box and instructions and could only get $5.00 for it. Things usually go good in our area too.

I bought mine 3 years ago from walmart for 10.00 after Christmas sale. I used it a couple times a week and it still works great. I love putting the mix in, setting the timer and going to bed. And waking up to fresh baked bread in the morning.

I have a bread machine I bought brand new at Kohls for clearance price of $27.00. That being said I think that I've used it twice. I don't think it gives the bread enough time to rise.

While you're searching for a bread machine I have a tip if you have a stand mixer. I took a baking class and they advised putting all of your ingredients in a stand mixer and turn it on for 8 minutes to knead. Than just put in a bowl for the first rising, punch down and put into your pan etc. Works great without the work of hand kneading.

Yep, I think its a love or never use type of thing - my parents use theirs constantly and we recently freecycled ours. Do you have freecycle in your area? If so, I'd hop on and watch for one (or post for one after you've given something away)...I think there are a lot of people that have one taking up room in their homes and never use them.

I just bought the Sunbeam one off of Amazon and I LOVE it! I'd never thought that I'd use a bread maker, but I've made bread twice this week (1/2 whole wheat recipes). I wanted to make healthier bread, and it's really tasty too.

The shipping was fairly high, but it is a large machine, like 19 pounds! And no tax on Amazon. I'd not buy a used bread maker, I think this one was really worth it. And the bread is so easy to make (but I did read the reviewers on Amazon and I don't use the bread machine recipes - I use ones I mostly get from Recipezaar). Everyone was saying that the recipes in the booklet weren't good with the machine (too much yeast).

I found one! A teacher friend has one they're going to sell me cheap. :) They take really good care of their stuff, and have barely used this machine. I'm psyched. I'll be getting it Tuesday. I'll let you know how my first loaf turns out.
