I know I will probably get flammed & please before the negativity pours out from those of you who have nothing better to do -- just please know that I am honestly trying to gather opinions and voice mine at the same time.

I am finding it VERY HARD to believe that some folks go as far as to say "its magical" to be at Disney in the rain. The realist in me is kicking in hard core saying there is NOTHING magical about wind driven rain smacking you in the face all day long while you try to muddle through a park. Especially since most of us travel with children I am thinking its a little bit of a stretch when I heard someone use the word "magical" .... its dangerous to walk in flip flops in the rain as I have found out the hard way one slip and fall later -- its miserable for children to walk in wet tennis shoes and wet socks ... YES IT IS DISNEY fine, but the fairy dust is for sure washed away when its rains like it has been. I know that you come to expect bad storms in hurricane season -- and bad thunderstorms which can produce just as hard driven rain anytime at all -- but still magical in the rain, I think not to the parent who paid a ton of money at BBB and to the child who is crying because their hairdo is ruined and its even more of a stretch to let people believe that the indoor areas will take care of you even realizing that there is rain outdoor --- the indoor areas become overcrowded and full of drama from wet exhausted Disney Loving adults with less than tollerant travelers with them and its a mixture for disaster... I feel very very badly for those folks who are dealing with this storm system and pray that they will have a better attitude than most but lets not be unrealistic and go as far as to think a poncho and some flip flops are going to pull you through the same way as if it were a dry actual factual magical day at Disney

I don't mind the rain because it causes the crowds to disappear. It can be refreshing/cooling (of course, NOT a fan of rain when it's cold). We just toss on the cheap dollar store ponchos and keep on going!

I agree with you OP but mostly because of the stormy conditions. I don't mind some rain during the day because we can plan around it. The wind and constant rain would drive me a little batty after a while.

Well, those folks are gonna have a magical week because Debby is now moving east and will be around all week according to the newest forecast. Stay safe out there!!

I think people are just trying to say that you can't do anything about the weather, so try to make the best of a bad situation and go for it.

I agree that tromping through the parks in the rain is not "magical".

Not trying to be a "flamer" but I have to say you sure know how to "rain on 'my' parade."

It is bad when it rains hard. I remember a trip a few years ago in December (when you don't expect storms) where a front stalled over FL and it rained hard for 24 hours straight. It was my mom and I and she wasn't in great health so we spent most of the day in the room and just headed to the outlet to get out.

I think when people respond to the posts from people who are there are just trying to make them feel better and get the most out of the situation. If you are local, you can just not go but if you have traveled there you can't do that.

Kind of agree- I envision couples, teens, and groups of friends making the most of the thinning crowds when it storms like that- families with young kids, not so much.

On the other hand, you kind of have to make the best of a soggy situation. Like when it rains on your wedding day- totally stinks, but what are you going to do, other than make the best of it? :confused3

My best friend is in Disney right now and I feel for her. Yes she, and her family, are making the best of it, but these are very expensive trips, hard to replicate (no do overs for this teacher's salary fam) and slogging through the driving rain, something you would avoid at all costs at home, is just not "magical" or "vacation-like." And, for the "The worst day at Disney is better than the best day at home" folks ... Honestly, I'd take my cozy, dry home over wet, muddy shoes and soaked, cold and cranky preschoolers any day, no matter what ride you're talking about. And that's without taking cost into consideration.

I know how she feels because we were "lucky" enough to have our first trip during the record cold snap of December 2010. Trudging around outside, miserably cold and (yes, again) wet, just isn't that much fun. We still waited in line. Crowds didn't disappear. (Just like us, everyone else paid for the trip and was trying to make best of it all.) Some days felt like a death march to fun; for us and others. Cast members complained endlessly, clutching their heat packs, and all I could think (but never said) was, 'Hey, at least you're getting PAID to be here, and not paying $600/day for the privilege of enduring this. And, hey, where did you get those heat packs?'

Did we enjoy ourselves? For the most part, yeah, we did. Was it as fun and magical as it would have been had we had weather in the 60s or 70s (or, heck, even high 40s)? Not even close.

I agree with OP. I think it is very rare and very few of us can say we have spent 3 days straight at Disney where it rained all day every day. It is one thing to say we love the afternoon rain shower because it can go along way to emptying out the parks and reduce lines however it is another thing to walk around the park with 30 mile an hour winds and relentless rain. That can not be fun. Having said all this I also respect that those there are trying to make the best out of a situation they have no control over. However, I would not flame a single one if they posted that they had a misreable time because of the weather. Most of us plan our Disney vacations months or years in advance and to have all or even half your trip impacted like this deserves a little sympathy.

We live in a fairly wet area (lots of rain) - Pacific Northwest. We have pretty good rain gear (good walking sandals, good quality light rain jackets with hoody, quick dry shirts/shorts). We always take with us on vacation. In warm wet climates we just dress for the rain and have a decent time, rain and all. I think it can be done, but you need the right gear on and travel light with the bags.

I've been lucky that in 33 trips I've never had to suffer continuous, driving, battering rain and wind - I've sat out a couple of storms but nothing that lasted more than an afternoon or so. So I feel for those whose vacations are getting hurricaned on. That can't be fun.

I hope they can find some magic in there and "make the best of it", absolutely, but I also know I would feel very put out, in their position! It takes a lot of hard-earned money (and harder-earned vacation time) to get a WDW vacation and they're not easily replaced.

I'm thinking dry thoughts for everyone there and lots and lots of pixie dust!:wizard:

I would say it all depends on the exact conditions of the weather. I mean, all rain is not created equal. Sometimes there is some light rain with breaks in between with no wind at all. Then again, sometimes there is torrential downpour rain with wind included, with no breaks at all, which just seems to go on forever. It also depends on the family/group. Not all families are created equal either. For us, with two kids (lets not forget soggy strollers for those with younger kids) it can still be fun and magical with light rain and breaks in the rain. Torrential downpour = not so much fun:sad2: Believe me, I come from a country, where when it rains, everyone stills goes on with their lives, so that is what I am used to. Then again, a few years ago we had a Disney trip planned in the month of May (we rescheduled for December that year) and the week we should have been there originally there was torrential downpour rain every day those 8 days in Orlando. We personally would not have been happy being at Disney with two small kids and two soggy strollers. That just simply would not have been magical for us!

To be fair, I think most of the time when people make that statement, they are talking about the daily shorter afternoon showers, not days on end of slogging rain from a stalled tropical system.

But, yeah. My dog & I didn't leave the house yesterday. We were both pouty.

Some people don't understand the difference between normal Florida rain and TS weather. They wouldn't go for a hike during a storm at home, but advise everyone to go walk hours in a rainstorm at Disney. :confused3 No one wants to be wet for hours. Not fun.

I hope the rain lets up some so you can have a normal rainy day instead of endless rain and wind.

p.s. It is dangerous to run in the Florida rain! Rain and plastic soled shoes are a slippery combination! Do not wear flip flops. Your feet will be cold, dirty and they offer zero support in treacherous conditions.

Of course it can be a true bummer because it isn't what you envision when you plan your trip. BUT we were there in May and it rained pretty hard for a couple days and we just went with the flow and continued touring.

We had a fun time and NO lines!! One of my favorite memories is from the rain and riding around and around on the Primeval Whirl. The girls were laughing and having a blast ~ us moms were just thinking about how wet we were getting but they really loved it so that outweighed the not fun part of being soaked.

I'm not saying I prefer it be raining but we still had fun! We also made some memories my kiddo will never forget!

I kind of agree with the OP. What if this trip is your long awaited, first (and maybe due to a bad experience this time) and only trip? I think I'd cancel any BBB appointments. That would be very hard to save. I also agree about trying to tromp through the parks with little kids and wading through the water- that is no fun. Unless you were prepared with all the gear of the above post- you'd struggle. Keep in mind this is not the typical afternoon summer shower here.
You can have some fun, but a full week of rain???? I really feel bad for anyone trying to have a good time this week.

We were there in 94' during hurricane Gordon. Whipping winds and cold rain slapped us around in our Mickey ponchos! It was a milder storm and the brunt of it lasted only 1-2 days. The parks were dead. We had zero wait for any rides. That being said, if I had to brave those conditions with children in tow, it may have not been so magical for me. I hope everyone that is there now can find a way to salvage as much of their vacations as they can. We all know how hard it is to plan and pay for these excursions!
