Reallocate Points after Purchase

I'm wondering if this is possible, and I couldn't find a similar question when searching the site.

I just purchased a new contract with banked points available. I also have a reservation coming up, which was booked before the new points posted. Can member services reallocate my points so that the new, banked points are used for my current reservation?

I had the same question with my first add-on!

MS can reallocate if the reservation was made after 7m, assuming different resort for the new purchase. If it was prior to 7m, then the new points would have to be the same home resort as well.

Looks like a screw-up waiting to happen to me. Unless you're absolutely going to bank the saved points from this UY into next and you know it, I don't think I would risk it.

I could see you getting screwed out of double points. Half from last UY that were banked and half from this UY.

I'm sure they CAN do this but be very careful and make sure the MS knows that they are doing. I would have them document it as two separate transactions. One to refund the points and one to use the banked points for the reservation.

Just a side note. I can't see how they could do this without effectively releasing the first reservation and making a new one. Maybe they can, but if they can't and you're going at a busy time of the year, your entire reservation could be in jeopardy in the period in-between. Please keep that in mind.

Good luck.

If they're under the same master and it's not bypassing the 11 month priority of the home resort, it shouldn't be an issue. While there is some small risk in doing so, it's really extremely small. One way around it is to make a new reservation and cancel the old one later if it's currently available. If not, I'd still do it. Even if it's a different home resort and made during the priority period or it's a separate master contract, there are ways to approximate the same idea in many situations.

Like dean said should not be a problem. I had ms do this for me yesterday for a December BCV trip, took 3 minutes. I did check when I got home to make sure all was in order. :)

I've done it more than once when I've added on and had banked points in the new contracts. It helped they were all for the same home resort which was also where I had the reservations.

But the interesting thing was the last time, about a year ago, I was on the phone with MS about something else, and I had just passed ROFR so I knew I had new points coming soon. I mentioned to the CM in passing I w/b calling back in a few weeks to do the reallocation once the contract was loaded into the DVC system.

She went ballistic! Told me she's been an MS CM for 15 years and she's never heard of anyone ever being able to do what I mentioned. Said it was specifically against the rules and any CM who told me she could do it didn't know what she was talking about.

I didn't argue. I didn't ask for details. Heck, I never even asked her anything to get her started in the first place. And I sure didn't tell her I had done this just a few months prior under the same exact conditions.

When the points came in weeks later, I called MS and started explaining the (different!) CM what I wanted to do. Before I could finish explaining it, she had already done it! She interrupted me and said you just want to use the banked points in the new contract to replace as many current UY points as points, right? Done!

It literally took 2 minutes.

Again, as has been pointed out so many times on so many threads on the board, the CM you get makes a big difference.

If you bought Add-On points through Disney they can pretty much change anything. If you bought through resale (timeshare store) than, no they will not do anything

As I explained in my post directly above yours, your statement is simply not true.

I've had more than one reallocation done, as I described in detail, using newly acquired resale points.

Have you had MS tell you they wouldn't help you do one because you were a resale buyer? That wouldn't seem right and I would have asked for a supervisor. Once the points are yours, no matter how you got them, MS should treat them, and us, the same, other than for the stated restrictions of resale point usage. Of which doing a reallocation is not one.

There are some things they can do and some they can't. Other than late banking and possibly pulling a reservation from developer inventory, there really is no difference between resale and retail points used for DVC itself.

I've had MS reallocate points just about once every year - either from adding on or else either waiting to bank in case we added a trip or from changing trips around.

I say I like to live dangerously but in all actuality I've never had an issue and only once did I have a CM that seemed sketchy on how to do it but it was accomplished eventually. More recently it's been easily handled by the CM's I've spoken to.

The representative with Member Services told me that they couldn't reallocate my points because I'm within 30 days of my reservation. If they were to swap the points, they'd all end up in "holding" status. Can anyone confirm or challenge this position?

within 30 days I believe that may be correct. You can try calling back and getting a different CM, but idk if it would work. I have not been in a 30 day or less situation before.

That is correct. Any point changes that result in any points in a reservation coming out that reservation 30 or fewer days from date of arrival (even if replaced by others) results in the removed points going into holding account.
