Real-life photos on cabin door?

Hi all! I have a newbie cruiser question -- we'll be cruising with a large group of grandparents, parents, and grandkids. I was thinking of making Mickey-head door magnets out of glitter cardstock and having a round photo opening in each where I can put a picture of each of the people in the cabin -- so both the bigger kids/adults and the non-readers can easily see which cabin has which grandparents and which siblings. All of the pictures I've seen of other peoples' doors, though, just have names and sometimes Disney characters. Is there a rule against using real life photos, or some other reason I should avoid doing that?

Thanks in advance :)

I've never cruised, but I would be cautious about putting a child's picture on their room door.

And of course I am always cautious about using glitter anywhere that I am not the one cleaning it up.
Both very valid points.

But, to answer OP, there's no restriction as to what you put on your door. Only that it must be magnets. No adhesives or tape.

It's your room, and your door, so do what you want. I think it's a great way to see who is in whose room, especially for younger kids. (Though my 3 year old figured it out pretty quick on the last 4 cabin cruise we were on.)

There is always a 'safety' concern with putting your name or kids names and photos on things (backpacks, bumper stickers on your car, stateroom door, whatever) because of 'stranger danger'. I don't let my kid in the hallway without me or someone in our group, so it is a non-issue for me.

While there is no rule just know those magnets walk off. I mean everyone on the ship who is an employee already can access a photo of what kid is where and guests know there are kids on the ship and your hallway is going to quickly figure out what kid belongs in what room. So I don't see a safety issue in it but you'd have to be okay with a potential stranger having your kids photo because they decided to walk off with your magnet.

I seem to remember a statement about DCL no longer allows advertising magnets, like for travel agents and stuff. But I couldn't find the reference to that on the DCL webstie.

I also heard someone say they were asked to remove their football magnets and then of course the big debacle over anything political in nature.

My kids are nearing 30 - so I am quite likely out of touch, but I would NOT put pictures of the kids on the doors. Let them each pick a character and then "that's their picture" for the cruise. Putting up the adults I think would be OK - and that way the kids can ID their room and the room of the "wanted adult".

Remember you are traveling with 3,000 - 5,000 strangers. And even though "price of entry" will keep a lot of people away, there are lots of creepers that can afford a DCL cruise.

Personally, I think the risk of putting up photos are overstated. The photos aren't likely to be stolen (though it does happen sometimes) and they aren't likely to make your kids less safe. Even if there was a predator on board, they aren't likely to pick a target based on a picture on a door. Teach them safety sure. But personally, I wouldn't want to teach them to fear the world. To each their own.

I think your idea for door magnets sounds like a lot of fun. Go for it! We customized our door each day with tickets and activities and pictures of what we were doing, plus some drawings on a little white board that my adult sister did for her families cabin. It was fun to watch the doors change and see what people in our group had been up to.

Also, I would NOT use those as a "way finder" for kids or grandparents. As has been said, magnets already have been known to be taken or just moved to other doors. I would think having actual pictures would make those an even bigger target for pranksters who would move them around to try and create chaos.

If you really want to do it, have those on the INside of the door and then they can be a souvenir.

Yeah, this would be my concern too, I don't want someone walking off with my pictures..

Thanks for the replies, everyone! The glitter cardstock has virtually no shed even fresh out of the package so I wasn't worried about making a mess. I didn't think about people intentionally moving the magnets to other doors -- that'd take a special kind of mean that I'd like to think wouldn't exist on a Disney cruise! And yes, the small ones will always have an adult with them -- we're not going to let kindergarteners run unsupervised! -- but I wanted to make it easy for them to recognize their own territory.

I appreciate the insights :)

As far as moving magnets...we saw a kiddo in a stroller snatch a cute magnet off a door...a few doors down the parents noticed and placed the magnet on the door they were standing in front of. LOL

I put our SR # on the front of our magnets...disguised a bit...but it was still there. Nothing happened.

I do not see an issue with pictures (for safety)...people will see the kids on board and they will likely end up with them in their own photos, too...in the background of course. Where I would caution, is combing the picture with their names...so if there was someone up to no good...they could not ID your child by name. Ie. "Jonny, your meema asked me to walk you back to your stateroom, she has a question"...which sounds like a believable story and even a kid with some bit of stranger danger may indeed go along because it sounds legit.

Everyone has a different comfort level on posting photos of kids. If mom and dad are okay with their littles' photos being displayed, then go for it. If you want to be more cautious, you might want, as an alternative, to take a photo of the pre-reader's favourite stuffy to post instead. You can always post the real photos in the rooms on the wall, which also take magnets.

The kids are going to learn their way around faster than the adults will. You will be asking them which way to go by day 2. I don't think this is needed at all.

And while I don't clutch my pearls over "stranger danger", once we tell anyone walking by that "little Jonny and Suzy are staying here and they look like this", then the person walking by isn't a stranger. They haven't had to work for the info. You've handed it to them.

Put pix of the adults on the door if you must. No kids.
