OK, we're into the final countdown for our cruise (under 100 days...time to dance!)...gonna be in Key West. I plan to savor my cheeseburger in paradise and margarita from margaritaville :drinking1 But, where do I get REAL key lime pie? While I'm sure that what they have in Margaritaville is passable, I want the real thing...from some nasty back alley bakery that only the locals know about or will go in. Any help? Shirley????

my hubby makes a killer key lime pie. want the recipie? very easy and we get the key limes at the local grocery store.

You can get Key LIme Pies at just about any restaurant in downtown Key West. When my wife and I were there, we walked into what would be considered a hole-in-the-wall shop and had wonderful key lime pies.

I think our family visited there as well, and I can't remember the name of the place. It also served wonderful monster-sized Key lime cookies.

krhardy, I had asked the very same question here over a year ago! :)

On a thread about Key West, I wrote:
"Oh, and one more thing -- would the Key Lime Pie Bakery be the best bet for delicious key lime pie? Or are all key lime pies created equal on Key West? Suggestions welcome and appreciated."

And Shirley *bless her heart* from The Perfect Gift replied:
"also the best Key Lime Pie I have had in Key West was at Jose Cantina on White Street - the second best which is closer to Mallory Square is Tree Top Restaurant which is right accross the street from Kino's."

Barkley - I do I do! My grandmother made an awesome key lime pie and I never got her recipe. Maybe your DH can bring it & I'll swap you a recipe for some wristbands :)

Good morning,
One of the best Key Lime pies I have had other than when the conchs use to make it down there, is at The Tree Top Restaurant and you really go what it seems to the top of a tree to eat - folks talk about the Golden Giraffe, but I myself wasn't impressed, but then I have to remember I am use to what I grew up with - I have a family receipe for Key Lime pie and when I get to work today, will post it - had it down at the shop so I could copy it for someone - the answer is always the quality of the Key Lime and also the amounts of "beats" - also remember Key Limes are no longer as numberous as they use to be and many times, subsituted with regurlar limes or lemons - makes a difference -
chat with ya later and have a great day
Blessings always
Shirley

I would love a copy of the recipe if someone doesn't mind sharing :goodvibes

I love Key Lime, my DGM use to make the very best when I was younger.....a lot younger :rotfl2:

Oh Dear Shirley, you are so kind. Can't wait to see your receipe. Now WHAT are you doing up at 3:16AM? Hope all is well! Take care!

Yes please post the receipe on this thread. Key Lime is my favorite pie. We had a killer homemade one in the Outer Banks a few years ago. We had it our first night at a lcoally owned restaurant. We had to go back for take out pie several times during that vacation. They would not share the receipe.

I use the recipe on the Nellie & Joe's Key Lime Juice bottle, easily found in grocery or speciality stores. It's so easy and tastes so great. I've even substituted real key lime juice for the bottled and it tastes great too.
I don't use the graham cracker crust, I feel it's too heavy of a taste, I use the Keebler Shortbread crust or the 'Nilla Wafer crust.

Thank You!!!

You are welcome Tammy1.

½ cup Key lime Juice (I use a bit more)
1 can sweetened condensed milk (low fat does not work well)
3 or 4 egg yolks (I use 3)

Mix together and pour in the pie shell and bake at 350° for 10-15 minutes. Let cool and top with fresh whipped cream.

Enjoy,

There is place in Key West I think on Front street, it's across from the mall area next to the old custom house. It's just a small place, and they have the best Key Lime pie. I don't know the name though... I'll try and find it. They have a few metel table and chairs outside and one inside, they have coffee and other baked goods. It's so good. I'll try and fingure out the name.

You can always zip into Kermit's on Green St. for a quick Key Lime fix. We had the frozen key lime pie on a stick (it is also dipped in chocolate) and it was delicious! :sunny:

I have had really great Key Lime Pie a few places in Key West (one of my best friends used to live on Big Pine Key so we went down often to see her.)

I like the VERY tart (as in pucker your mouth) and most places I have had the pie have had it too sweet and not enough tartness.

I think someone posted the key to great key lime pie is the juice, and regular limes just don't cut it (although they are used frequently.)
There was a restaurant down by Mallory Square, on a side street that all seating was outdoors and the portions were HUGE (near Hogs Breath I think) and their Key Lime Pie was really good.

Good luck (and I make my own at home from time to time too...I just use a bit more key lime juice than a recipe calls for to get a little more of the tart taste to it.)

It's been about 10 years since I've been to Key West but the Margaritaville had really good Key Lime Pie! there was another place that had to die for KL pie but the name escapes me. If I remember I'll post!
I'm getting hungry for pie! :goodvibes

:Pinkbounc OMG! FROZEN KEY LIME PIE ON A STICK :Pinkbounc

IMHO.........Blond Giraffe on the opposite side of the street just about a block or so from Margaritaville.

It is a piece of key lime pie dipped in chocolate and frozen on a stick. It's making my mouth water just thinkin' about it!!! LOVED IT!!!

Hugs,

RonnieJo :flower:

I'm getting off in Key West just to find key lime pie on a stick. I thought it was one place that had it. Do I go to Kermit's or the Blonde Giraffe? So many choices!! Are either of the places within walking distance from the port or do we need a taxi?
