Read Aloud Ideas

Tonight I am going to Banes and Noble to purchase a book for a Read Aloud. Next Tuesday, I will be performing a Read Aloud to 1st graders and I am super excited. I was wondering if anyone can name a few good books that would be great. I need book ideas that are rather intresting and works well inside a classroom. Keep in mind, I will need to create a follow up assignment; therefore, there must be a way an assignment can be created from the book. I know I will get alot of help here with such amazing teachers!

I personally would be too embarrassed to read this book to a class, but my Dh did it! It is called "I Stink" and it is all about how a trash truck operates. The kids LOVED my Dh's rendition. He had this "trash truck" voice he would use.....it was hilarious. He read it to my son's kindergarten class, although I made sure he brought another book with him in case the teacher did NOT want it read! It is a short book, though. You would be done in 5 minutes. It seems like it would lend itself to a lot of follow-up assignments, although I can't think of any off hand. Good luck!!!

Our kids' favorite bedtime book is "Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?" by Dr. Seuss. DH reads this book to them every night and sometimes more than once. He has it memorized and the kids pretty much do, too.

The title of that book reminded me of a book my Mom used in her class, The Gas We Pass . The boys always loved that book. She would always use this book during science when she taught about the digestive system.

I would get teacher approval before buying this book.

I LOVE that book, probably because my boys loved it when they were younger.

That is a pretty broad question.

But this week I read How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Mark Teague aloud to my 3rd graders (it would work well in 1st grade too). The story is about a boy who wrote an essay on his summer vacation to read in class. He starts off telling the truth, but then his imagination takes over.

The follow up assignment for my students was to write an essay about their summer vacations...start off telling me something that really happened and then let their imaginations take over...the stories shouldn't be all true.

In first grade students can draw a picture instead of writing the story.

I love Jamie Lee Curtis's books! They read a loud really well and they are very funny. All are picture books, but for beginning 1st graders, I think that would be perfect, as compared to a chapter book.

Today I Feel Silly would easily lend itself to an assignment about feelings and emotions and how different things make you feel. Maybe each child could be given a blank face and an emotion and they could draw on a face to go with that emotion.

I'm Gonna Like Me would make for a great assignment for each child to list some of the things they do well, maybe make up an award for themselves.

There is a new one out this month that I haven't read yet too.
