i have a tri band mobile on o2 p.a.y.g ,does anyone know if this is ok to use in florida, and if so what is the local providers name ie orange, vodaphone etc there, as i have a list on my phone of providers all over the world cheers guys

I'm sorry but you can't use o2 Pay As You Go in America, or at least you couldn't when we went in April. I think it may be possible to hire a phone to use but I think this is expensive.

You may also be able to buy a U.S Pay As You Go sim card in America and use it in your phone, perhaps someone else will confirm this.

Yours

Daniel

Don't know about the pay as you go side of things, but I seem to remember the provider was T-mobile

along, the same lines - we own 2 tri-band phones. Can we purchase 2 PAYG simcards in Florida and use them ok over there to communicate between parks?

We are both on vodaphone, so I assume we would have to get the mobiles unlocked first?

don't know anything about pay as you go, had an 02 contract phone last year, no prob phone found provider as soon as we landed. beware though, could not charge the phone as my charger was 240v and the american system was 110v, will be taking car charger next year and hope this will work.::MinnieMo

I used my 240v charger and an adaptor in my hotel room with no problems at all - it is a little slower though I'll grant you.

The car charger is definitely the quickest way to go if you are in your car long enough.

If you plan to use the phones for comunicating around the park i can suggest that buying some 2 way radios would be much cheaper! When i went to florida i took my 02 and the next time my vodaphone contract phone and both times came back with bills that cost more than my flights!!! I would really reccomend not taking mobile phones to the US, they cost so much!

as chris said, mobiles in the states are very expensive to use, i'm with 02 (contract) and last year when we went my operator changed automatic on the phone as it was tri-band, it was T&T or Vodafone depending where we was , i run up a bill of around £120 and i diddn't use the phone much probably 1.5 hours in total.
i took a few post office phone cards which were really good value, as you can either phone mobiles or landlines as you have a time limit on the cards as opposed to £..

The first time we went to florida we rented O2 mobiles from CarPhone Warehouse - way too expensive and we were unable to connect 90% of the time!! :-( These cost us over £200 for two weeks!
Next time we used our own tri-band contract phones - after arranging a cheaper international call service through O2 whilst we were away. That worked fine :-) Cost about an extra £20 on top of our normal phone contracts.
Having friends in florida we naturally chatted and I strongly believe that to actually buy 2 cell phones when you arrive (from Walmart for instance) would be by far the best option.
Just a thought :-)

i suggest you call your service provider to find out...
most of them have some sort of arrangement in the states...

our phones don't work there, so we get phones from a provider that specializes in that service.....the phones are free....we just have to pay for usage....since we're american expats, we like having a US phone number on the cellphone we use....it works out much cheaper for the americans calling us.....

We are with Orange and took two triband phones with us.

TBH the GSM coverage was dismal. The USA are a long way behind Europe with mobile phone coverage. A lot of the domestic networks use CDMA which isn't compatible with our GSM phones (which is why you see Americans yapping away on their phones when yours has no coverage)

Hi,

We just returned from Orlando yesterday. Me and GF both took our pay as you go phones, and both worked a treat. I'm on T-Mobile and GF on O2. Both used the American T-Mobile network, and sometimes the AT&T network while we were there.

We only used the phones for texting and mms, both phones sent and received texts without problems (good for keeping up with the footy!). The only thing you have to check is that your phone is tri-band, which is now common with most newer handsets. We had no problems in getting a GSM signal. When we visited a few years ago the USA was well behind the UK in phone technology, however all this has changed, and now I believe they are way ahead of us. They have all the latest handsets, some we don't even have yet, and their networks are now mostly digital.

Hope this helps!

Dave.
