Rci points question

For the first time since we purchased, we are considering and RCI exchange, but I have a question. Can borrowed points be used for an exchange? And, if so, what are the implications if we should need to cancel the trip?

I made our first ever RCI Points exchange in January. The CM told me that if I wanted to extend our trip down the line I could use borrowed points (since I wanted to bank our remaining points).

As to cancelling, I'm not sure what the consequences would be. For certain, you would not be able to use them outside of an RCI exchange, but I don't know what further restrictions there would be.
