We are looking to go to Yellowstone National Park in May or June 2014. There is a resort on the RCI web site that we would like to use as an exchange. My understanding is that you can put in your request up to two years in advance.

My question is this: if I call Member Services this coming June which use year points will be taken from me - 2012 or 2014 when I am actually traveling?

Thanks for any help.

Kelly

Did you find the resort by going through the DVC Member website? Most of the RCI exchanges are not available to DVC Members using points.

Yes. I went through the DVC web site to find the resort. I need to know if when entering a request for exchange, if they take the points immediately or from the use year of travel.

Normally they take the points in the UY of the exchange dates but they don't actually take points until the match is found, unlike some other timeshares including Marriott.

Thanks for the links and the great information. I think I have my answers. :)

You might also consider a direct exchange for the Worldmark resort in West Yellowstone Village (not listed, last I checked, in DVC's list of RCI resorts). I believe the location is much closer than Island Park Villas. A direct exchange would allow you to influence size of unit, length of stay and choice of check-in day.

what do you mean by a direct exchange? we have wanted to go to Yellowstone but not excited about locations to choose from. I went to worldmark site you linked and that looks like a great location and place. What exactly is a direct exchange and how does it work?

May I suggest renting out your points and using cash to book one of the Xanterra hotels at Yellowstone? Then you are right in the park and won't have to drive the 25 mile each way trip every day to just get to Yellowstone.

It's much easier to visit Yellowstone if you stay in the park. Plus you could move around to different hotels. The two newer lodges at Canyon are really nice (and we also stayed in the cabins last summer for a nights). Lake Yellowstone Hotel is very nice, as is Mammoth Hot Springs. It's really nice getting to stay in a historic place.

And then there is Old Faithful Inn, which is what the WL was based on. You'll see the similarities when you drive up. If the Snow Lodge is open, it's very modern and has a good restaurant in the lodge.

A direct exchange is when two owners work together directly to satisfy the other's needs. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a Worldmark owner who would trade a reservation to WM Yellowstone booked on their account directly with you for a DVC reservation booked on your account.

Two places to post ads seeking a Worldmark Direct Exchange partner:

Worldmark Owner site (unofficial but highly popular): http://wmowners.com/
Timeshare Users Group Marketplace: http://tug2.com/timesharemarketplace/

Hope this helps! (I own Worldmark ... but am deeply borrowed into next year's points!)

PS: Worldmark does NOT use a "home resort" system. You can work this trade with any Worldmark owner who has sufficient points, patience, interest and reputation (mutual trust).

Thanks Deb & Bill.

I am just at the beginning stage of planning this holiday. We aren't going until early summer 2014. I like your suggestion and we have rented before when we went out hiking in the Grand Canyon and once when we took a cruise to Alaska. I will take a look at the hotels you suggested - Old Faithful Inn may need to be on the list. :) Thanks again,

Kelly

If they find a match they will take the points, meaning they do not contact you to tell you they will be doing this, it's automatic.

We used to live in Montana, so we went to Yellowstone a lot. We were just in Yellowstone and Glacier National Park last summer. We've also been to Yellowstone in the winter twice. Now that is pretty spectacular.

But you'll need to go before Dec 21, 2012, or at least that's what the movie 2012 showed. ;)
