tweezers
nail clippers
disposable razors
nail file
metal slinky (for ds 11)
and does deoderant count as a liquid?
Thanks,
Christine

You can bring nail scissors and any other metal scissors less than 4 inches in length.

All of these items are permitted in your carry-on baggage. As for the deodorant, the general rule is that if it holds its shape outside of its container it isn't considered a liquid.

That said I would also avoid items that can be considered a "gel", like some clear deodorants.

All of those items are fine - scissors included as long as the blade is 4 inches or less. If the deoderant is a solid it can go in your bag if its a gel or a liquid it belongs in your 3-1-1 baggie.

In addition - each person can bring their own quart size baggie with your liquids of 3.4oz or less inside. So you could bring 6 of the 3-1-1- bags.

All the info you need can be found here :

OP is from Canada - if flying from Canada TSA rules do not apply - CATSA rules apply. That is why it is important for people to clarify when they post questions like this.

Pointed scissors with blades of 4 inches or less are permitted by TSA, they are prohibited by CATSA.

The CATSA site is very simple to read http://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/english/pack_smart.html

:) There are some very critical differences between TSA and CATSA, so it makes it challenging. I have lost a few pairs of scissors over the years as a result.

HOWEVER for all we know OP is driving across the border and flying out of SeaTac - hence the need for people flying internationally to clarify if they are flying or driving+flying.

Good point - I didn't notice that at all!

But the OP can take a whip (CATSA allows them but the TSA doesn't).

Totally not helpful, but it amuses me.

We can only take scissors with blunted (rather than pointed) tips.

Thank you all for your replies, we are Canadian but we are flying our of Sea-Tac. It would have cost $700 to fly from Vancouver and we got flights from Sea-Tac for under $300. Multiply that by 6 and it is a huge savings. I appreciate all your knowledge, I have lost scissors too flying in Canada but it is good to know it is ok for this trip. You are all so helpful. Good to know I can't bring my whip .:rotfl: hubby will be very happy.

Thanks for clarifying - www.tsa.gov

And don't bring prohibited produce/food items in the car; you may want to read up on that too. You don't want to miss your holiday due to a stray orange, and yes, I HAVE seen many people turned away at land crossings for something so apparently minor. :)

Bavaria: glad to see you posting. You add so much with your knowledge and expertise beyond our USA-centrism.

Hey, crashbb is the one educating readers about whips on the airplane. I myself used to discuss the ulu knife rule. :) All that we need now is our orange friend to join in and discuss bringing his knitting needles on the plane....

Ah, good memories!

(and for the record, AirOntario used to forbid knitting on the plane long before 9/11, and long before CATSA implemented the knitting needle ban, in case anyone is interested)

TSA lifted the ban before CATSA finally relented a few years ago.

A few years ago, a woman was ahead of me in line with three homemade pecan pies for her DS she was visiting for the holidays.

Since it is considered a gel, they were confiscated - or she could ship them to her DS. She was so mad, she accused the TA of wanting to get a slice of her homemade pecan pie for their lunch! But a rule is a rule......

This is one of those items that is up to interpretation. Is it a food product that is clearly baked and it is really not any different then PB&J.
