Rating for Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland

Small guests at the Disney Store that I saw this weekend (I'm a CM) would point to the Alice reusable shopping bag we have and specifically to Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter and say, "That man looks so scary!" and every time I said, "Are you excited to see Alice in Wonderland?", more often than not, I got a resounding NO. Only the older preteens and teens were excited. I will most definitely have to pre-screen this.

My son is still freaked out over Princess and the Frog, and he's 7. He makes me skip over the "Are You Ready' song that Dr. Facilier sings on the soundtrack.

I'm sick of these movies being so scary. I pre-screened Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (PG) and the second scene was so scary that I almost jumped out of my seat. It was way too intense for children, parent-guided or not.

I think that you have to personally see these movies to make sure they won't scare your kids. I don't trust reviews anymore. I think most of the ones we read are studio shills posing as media coverage. Either that or other children are much more jaded than my kids. Maybe it's because we don't play video games. Who knows.

For a good, non media website, we use to decide on appropriate movies, you can try:

Common Sense Media

Not sure if Disboards will let this URL show up but here it is:

http://www.commonsensemedia.org/reviews

Or, if that gets censored, commonsensemedia dot org

Great reviews and real life examples of each movie (for example, Percy Jackson is rated as age 11+).

Excellent website, one that we definitely use. There is another one that I use that gives a good bit of detail about swear words, alcohol use, and things like that. It is a religious-based website so I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share it. The reason I like it so much is that the reviewers give so much detail. I feel really prepared before we go see a film now.

On another note, my kids aren't what I would call jaded, but they enjoy some of the darker films, like Corpse Bride and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My almost 6 year old and my 9 year old are very excited to see the new Alice. They are Johnny Depp fans (can you blame them?) and they know that's him under the make-up. Maybe that's why they aren't scared? I don't know. I'll most definitely preview the movie before I let them see it though. You just never know.

My son saw a preview two nights ago and came to tell me the movie is PG. I do not intend to take any of my children to see it - they have all said it is too scary looking. I hope they put a disclaimer that it might scare young children.

I was going to say I saw the rating after the trailer. It's PG.

My DD 3 wants to see Alice. She thinks it hilar that the red queen says "I need a pig" in the preview. Everytime the commercial comes on she stops in front of the tv.
