Rated PG Movies

DS turns 7 next month and I think I have finally figured out a birthday party idea for him. I am thinking movies followed by dinner/playing at Chickfila. The only kids movie playing then is Mars Needs Moms. A Disney film that is rated PG.

Would you allow your 6/7 year old first grader to see a PG movie? This wil be his first school party and I just don't wanna cause any issues with the other parents. We are in a pretty rural area and are pretty limited on the indoor birthday party activities/venues available. He requested a an indoor bounce facility that has 6 or 7 large inflatables inside and a party room but since it is an hour drive I'm afraid no one will show up and I don't wanna hurt his feelings or waste the money. The movies are only about 15-20 minutes away.

Have you read the book? I love it, but it almost makes me cry every time I read it.

Generally speaking, DS isn't allowed to see PG movies unless DH or I have viewed them first. All PG movies are NOT created equal.

No I was not aware that it is based on a book. I am so tired of these kid movies making me cry. I cried at Despicable Me and pretty much every Pixar movie made. It's a good thing I'm not pregnant and emotional or anything  then I'd really be in trouble.

I wish I could preview but that just wouldn't be feasible as it is released on his birthday and the invites would need more notice than that of course.

I've never had any issues with Disney movies before. I also haven't seen many PG movies that I'd find inappropriate for a kid that age.

On your invitations, just let the parents know what movie their kids will be seeing. Also indicate that it's a Disney movie and that it's rated PG. If they have any issues, they will probably let you know.

After further Google research I have found out that Up and Tangled were both rated PG also. I had no idea. I do remember a big commotion about Up after we had already seen it because it was the first Disney (animation) to show blood in a scene. But honestly hadn't really noticed it while watching it.

I think Tangled was PG because of her hitting Flynn with the frying pans. There is some website that reviews movies for things like violence, etc. Hopefully someone chimes in with it because I can't think of what it is.

I wouldn't have a problem, but our kids have seen every rating R and under. My DS7's favorite movie right now is Saving Private Ryan, the TV version of course but DH took them to see Transformers and even Hancock in the theater.

With the rating system that is now, Goonies would be rated PG-13. I don't think it is a very good rating. The games rating is bad also.

Instead of going to the movies, could you set up a "theater" in your home and watch something on DVD that you find appropriate. You could get popcorn bags or buckets for the kids, movie theater candy boxes and drinks. Set up the room as theater-like as you can.

We always have tried to do our parties at home if possible. Much easier to handle and much cheaper.

I wouldn't have a problem at all.

Honestly, most G movies don't hold the interest of 6/7 year olds (except Pixar ones).

Some PG movies my kids watch:
Alice in Wonderland (newest one)
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
Tangled (loved it!)

DD is having a movie party at our local theater in few weeks. We're not sure yet what they're going to be but based on this thread it checked the ratings on the 2 possibilities. I'm clueless because I never thought about this. :lmao:

Anyway one is PG and one is G.

I've gotten a few RSVP calls and no one asked about the movie.

I'm still going to let my daughter pick since it's her party.

I always try to avoid having parties at home if possible. :rotfl2: Much easier to handle and I don't care if it costs more because I don't have to clean up. :woohoo:

I think ratings nowadays are irrelevant. There is already a big controversy amongst the critics that the group who makes the ratings is hurting the film industry over their small minded idea of what people should be "protected"from.

I don't find anything wrong with PG at all. There are even movies that are R that kids that age can see depending on the subject( Saving Private Ryan was an excellent example) and what takes place in the film.

One five yr old may be able to handle Harry Potter while another squirms. So it just really depends on your child.

But most PG films that just tackle rough, life subjects should be fine. I was very mature for my age as a young kid and loved movies and books that were a bit older, they never bothered me. The only thing that ever scared me was the horror films, which when I was 10 even, were required viewing via the older siblings.

my twins are turning 7 in march and they have requested an at home pajama party. they are soooo excited. the kids will all wear their pajamas and do a lot of things their older brother got to do on his birthday sleepover, without the actual sleepover. no doubt a movie will be involved. its just a thought in case you do find the movie is a problem for parents of his friends, then you can pick whatever movie he might want that is G.

that said, my kids can and do see pg films, depending on the story matter, so the rating wouldn't be a problem for me. it might be helpful to talk to a few of the moms to make sure they are good with it before you fully commit.

eta, after watching the preview I can say that my son would not watch this w/o me. it would really scare him, to be honest, the separation of mom and son. but that is his personality. he would probably love it if I am sitting next to him. and his twin sister would have NO problem with it at all.

That might be a workable idea if we had a family room/den/basement or any kind of dedicated kids room. Unfortunately we live in a small rancher so there really isn't much room for an indoor party especially since I want to invite all 18 kids in his class plus his cousin.
Plus I am hoping that with it being a brand new movie that none of them have seen before and it being in a theater hopefully it will hold their attention a lil longer than say something they have seen over and over again.

And like a pp said I don't wanna clean my house to get ready for the party and then clean it up after the party!:thumbsup2

I remeber that website a pp had mentioned that stated exactly why it is rated PG not just a description but also can't remember it.

I think I am going to go for it. Now just gotta convince DS it is a better idea than the bounce place.

I wouldn't have any problem with it. It is almost impossible to find a G movie any more. And my kids watched everything at that age including some R's. My DS loved Lord of the Rings movies when he was 6/7.

I'd just put we are seeing Disney's Mars needs Moms and let them look up the rating if they are the type who is overly concerned. For the vast majority just a Disney movie would be all they needed to know.
