Rash on DD

Let me start this by saying that I AM making an appointment for dd tomorrow with a dr, I just gotta figure out what kind of dr??

I think I may have posted about this before but thought maybe some new posters might have some ideas. Especially with the rash changing.

A couple of years ago dd was running and playing with the dog in the house. I was on the phone with dh. She came running and crying to me that she was itching. She was covered head to toe in red welps and itching all over. I thought she had gotten into something and immediately put her in the tub to wash it off. As she cooled down, it went away. For a long time after that every time she got hot she would break out that way and then it started doing it when she got upset or excited. I took her to the pediatrician and he said it was an allergy of some kind and told me to give her an antihistamine every day. All that did was make her sleepy, and it kept down the itching but not the rash. Then she quit itching whether she took the antihistamine or not.

It got better and almost stopped so we thought she was growing out of it. She hasn't complained about it in a long time. But now for the past few days she has been outside in the afternoons playing with her baby niece. Now she is breaking out with a rash but its smaller, red spots. Its NOT heat rash. She doesn't itch, but under her watch will swell up and look like whelps in the shape of her watch. (the watch is a plastic band) Once she comes in and cools off, the rash goes completely away.

Anyone have any ideas of what it could be? And I have tried all the peds and gps--they aren't helping much. So I thought about a dermatologist maybe? or a allergist?

Oh, and she doesn't seem to sweat. Not sure if that is related.

I would go straight to a dermatologist.

Have you NEVER noticed her sweating? That is actually a very big deal and could be a sign of some underlying condition. Be sure to tell this to the derm.

Sounds like she is allergic to her own sweat. I've read about that somewhere. Also, they are WELTS. A Whelp is a newborn puppy (wolf, seal, bear etc).

This happens to my youngest son when he sweats and he is wearing under armour. Only in that combination. He can wear under armour, but not while playing sports/working out. It lasts for a few days, is tiny and doesn't itch at first. It will start to itch a few days later. Rash lasts for about a week, antihistamines do not help at all. No other man-made materials bother him.

Sounds like she's allergic to something in her watchband. My mom doesn't sweat and she cannot wear any metal but platinum.

Your description sounds like eczema. Your DD's experience sounds similar to my son's. Hydrocortisone helps with the itch and inflammation and for more persistent outbreaks he receives prescription medication from the doctor. Here's a good link: http://www.webmd.com/allergies/guide/eczema

Good luck!

A few thoughts. There are lots of things to consider, just start with what made today different from other days that you can think of and if there really is nothing I would consider something possibly outside. The first time this happened was it the same time of year?

There is the possibility that someone is treating their lawn with something your daughter is highly allergic to or that there is a mold or other irritant blooming that came in on your dog AND that she touched while playing outside. Could it be fertilizer or something you use on your dog? people often put down winterizer fertilizer around this time of year. Or maybe some farmers are treating local crops somehow or insects? Then there is the possibility of mold growing on leaves or in grass clippings the dog or she might have rolled around in, grass itself? Maybe it's not your house but a neighbors house or a nearby farm, if something is being sprayed and your child is very allergic it could happen.

Another thought, some people can be highly allergic to latex or other synthetic materials. I get red marks similar to what you describe any time plastic of any kind touches my skin so all my clothes have to be natural fibers such as cotton. Any watch I wear would do the same to me as it does your daughter, the only metals I can tolerate next to my skin are gold and titanium...plated anything causes my skin to turn green like The Hulk.

If it were my child I would go with the Benedryl and maybe for a few days you might want to consider keeping her in all cotton clothes, switching to ALL unscented detergent, a basic Glycerine type soap and a unscented baby shampoo just so her skin can calm down.

Dr's do have medications such as Prednisone available to them if your daughter were in extreme distress but they generally don't like to give the medicine out willy-nilly. None-the-less you should be aware things do exist to help her in case she is at risk of hurting her skin or can't sleep.

I hope you can find the answer

Thanks all. I am calling the dermatologist today but it will take some time to get an appointment. So may try some of your suggestions until then.

LOL, thanks Jennasis! I knew that and when I actually proof read my post I kept saying "that's not right" but wasn't seeing my mistake. Yes, she will break out in welts, not puppies or baby seals.

Yes, def. call a dermatologist. My son had a rash a few weeks ago and I brought him to his pedia. They gave him medication but it made things worse. I called a derm. and luckily got in the next day. It was eczema and not a fungal rash as his dr. thought. The fungal med. made things so much worse. I learned my lesson - skin issues - straight to a dermatologist.

Some people are "allergic" to being hot and break out in hives. A dermatologist is an ok route to go but I would actually go to an allergy specialist to have her tested to see if there is something in her clothing, laundry detergent, etc. that is making her break out.
