Rape & Murder in NO: I need help understanding this

I can't afford therapy so fellow DIS'ers please help. I know that I have never experienced the desperation and suffering that these people have, and I hope and pray that I never, ever do. I understand looting for food, water, and diapers...I know I'd do it myself for my kids if I were there also.

I do NOT understand how women evacuees in the Convention Center could not go to the bathroom without a male escort because they would be raped and have their throats slit. Did this REALLY happen? I have watched a lot of news reports and I have heard them briefly mention the word "rape" but not to any details. It's just the evacuees getting on camera and saying stuff about rape and I read online news reports that mentioned the above.

I am sick, sick, sick over this. Seriously disturbed by it. Don't tell me people go crazy without food and water. I know you could put my husband in the same situation and he wouldn't be grabbing, raping, and murdering teenage girls in bathrooms. I have lived in a city my whole life. I am not sheltered!!! I cannot imagine that this is happening. It's like a bad scary movie.

Please help me try to make sense of this. I can't.

i am from the uk and we are watching the news in disbelief.
the rapes the looting (not food) the shooting at police officers are you sure this is happening in the usa.
civilisation has just crumbled and it seems to have crumbled very very quickly.
also its being reported over here the national guard had to take 30 brits out of the astrodome because the were being racially abused because they are white.
terrible disaster but terrible behaviour by the people of new orleans. what happened to helping your fellow man it just seem rob and kill as long as im allright.

I think the volume of those assults might be overstated because I read a yahoo piece about how they were unable to verify any of the instances they were told about (ie., someone talked to someone else that this had happened to, or they knew a family whose child was assulted but they weren't able to track down actual victems)

This is what I'm praying is true. I really really need to stop watching the news. It's starting to get to me.

I have heard that they are unconfirmed and I hope it is true. I really hate to think people become that violent in this type of situation.

I hope most of it is not true.

But remember, especiall during Mardis Gras, New Orleans had a pretty high crime rate. I remember reading that during those "party times" there was a lot of violent crime. Those types of people are everywhere and they were in New Orleans. They have used this opportunity to run rampant. I do not, for one minute, believe that normal citizens turned nutso.

I live in south Louisiana and trust me, the reports of rape, violence, etc. have been greatly exaggerated by the national news. I have seen the same things you have and our local news affiliates are disgusted by what is being reported as am I.

It is true that some of these things have occurred, however, most of these reports are not true and the news organizations are using it for ratings or whatever.

Many bad things have happened at the Convention Center, but our local crews have been in there and did not see the things being reported nationally. Certainly the conditions were deplorable and some did try to take advantage of the crisis, but not to the extent you have heard.

For example, on Thursday, there were reports on national news that Baton Rouge was being looted, gun fights were breaking out, people were being carjacked, etc. However, NONE of those things were true. There was one small incident at one shelter and that was it.

Please belief that most Louisiana residents are wonderful people. We are all trying to help those who have lost homes and businesses and we appreciate all the assistance that your states and invididuals are providing.

Here's the thing;

These are the people who stayed behind, for the most part, and did not evacuate:

the elderly
the very young
the too poor to have transportation
the sick
and the very bad people who stayed behind to take advantage of a bad situation. It would happen in any city. I think part of the reason this is so upsetting, is the fact that we all have to accept the fact that we are all this vulnerable, and if God forbid something catastrophic happens in our towns, we can see what could happen.

Nothing excuses the behavior, if you watch the news regularly you know these things happen all the time everywhere. Conditions do not have to be that bad for people to take advantage. Rape is rarely about passion or sexual desire, it is a CONTROL issue. The more desperate people become the more out of control they feel hence the aggressive actions. Some of these perps are probably drug users also and can't get their next fix. I hope they get everyone out quickly and let the bad guys have at each other.

Geraldo said he saw a guy who was (or had been) killed because he had or was trying to rape a 13 year old girl.

I just heard on FOX news that a man raped and KILLED a 7 year old girl in the Convention Center and then 10 -13 men killed him after he did that.....good for them.

Did anyone see Greta Van Sustern just a few minutes ago? Horrible, shocking.

They have a girl on there whose Cousin was in New Orleans. She said in the Superdome that one guy got in a scuffle with a Natl. Guardsmen and got his gun and killed the Guardsmen. Another man raped and killed a 7 year old girl. A group of guys ended up beating the rapist too death.

I don't think there is any way to describe it other than some people turn into animals in situatinos like there. I don't think there's any explanation.

I agree. Why anyone would do that to a 7 year old girl (she must have lost her parents ) is beyond belief....it's a shame they weren't able to stop him while it happened. So horrible

Update: the Women's Center in Houston is providing counseling for some of the women and children who were raped and survived.
