I'm no expert on Southern California highways, but I travel that route every other year, and I always go:

I-10 W to CA 60 West to CA 91 West to CA 57 South

Well I always try and avoid DL on weekends so most likely a weekday. Another option is to fly into sna do the DL part always first and palm springs last.
