Ran the rock n roll today in Raleigh. My brother was ahead of me by about 25 minutes. The course probably has 11 hills in it. Around the 10.5 mile a man collapsed right in front of my brother . The other runners did CPR for about 5 minutes till the ambulance came. A few hours ago they announced that 2 participants died. We are assuming he was one of them. The gentleman was possibly in his forties and he was tracking at 8 minute miles. By that point the the weather was about 70 maybe. Both runners were running the half. I can't imagine how tough this would be for the families and wonder if there were any known health issues. Is this more common lately or have I heightened my awareness of it?

That is so sad. I wouldn't imagine that having 2 runners die in one race is very common.

So very very sad. I said a prayer for the two runners.

I don't think we hear of death's from races but it does happen. I remember I worked for a large company one time and it hosted a marathon (long before I was involved in races). One of the employees that participated , I did not know him. He crossed the finish line and then collapsed and died. I don't think he was even 30 years old. No known illnesses that anyone knew of. Very sad.

Just saw the news and it was the same man. He was 35 years old. The other man was 31 and collapsed with the finish line in view.:sad2: My prayers go out to these poor families.

So sad. Seeing this reminded me of the 3 runners that died in 2009 during the Detroit marathon weekend.

The article states that the death rate for marathons is rare at .8 per 100,000 participants.

Interesting statistic. I wonder if more deaths come from unknown health issues, heat or lack of training?

if he was at an 8 minute pace at the finish then it was not a lack of training for sure. How sad....
