A friend of mine just sent me this in response to my e-mail mentioning that we would like to go to Aulani in 2014. Can anyone tell me about rain?

Aloha! -- Before you make plans to visit Hawaii Disney, check out the rainy season & the location on the island. The windward side seems to get more rain than the leeward side, We are on the leeward side of Maui. We have had very little rain. We can see rain storms in the mountains but they rarely hit us. The past week or so has seen a lot of rain on the other islands. When there is a lot of rain, some of the islands get flash floods. I have no idea where Disney is located, but it is worth it to investigate

Thank you.

Bobbi - I think you (we) are in luck with Aulani's location! Rainy season is typically Nov - March in the islands but check this out on Frommer's:

Sun All the Time -- Your best bets for total year-round sun are Waikiki Beach and the Ko Olina (southwest) coast of Oahu.

You might want to check out NOAA's National Weather Service website (see http://www.nws.noaa.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=hnl) to get some information about precipitation, temperature, and other weather conditions. Current daily weather data is available for Kapolei, HI, which is a little closer to Ko Olina than Honolulu. However, historical weather data can be retrieved for Honolulu.

We are going to Aulani in September 2012, so I retrieved the Monthly Weather Summary for September 2011 under the 'Observed Weather' tab. The Summary shows the observed weather totals for the month, the departure from the historical average, and the observed weather total for the prior September.

I know I should not look at one month (09/2011) and try to predict the weather for 09/2012, but at least it gives me an idea of what the weather might be like for the month that I visit.

By the way, the Monthly Weather Summary also shows snowfall totals. There was no snow recorded for September 2011 or September 2010. But we're still taking our winter gloves with us (mainly because we plan on going to Haleakala while we are on Maui).

Take more than your gloves - take your ski jacket or winter coat. I had a pretty warm hoodie but kept hearing how cold it was (32 degrees) so I took the blanket off our bed "just in case". By the time the sun came up, I had it wrapped around me. Four other women had done the same thing!

The summit of Haleakala is over 10,000 feet above sea level so it's FREEZING up there! It is above the clouds and there are icicles hanging off of the roof of the observation building. The air is also very thin and it is hard to breathe until you get acclimated to the height. (I have also been known to bring the comforter from my bed with me!) But it's a beautiful sight.

I agree with the previous responses - Aulani is located on the leeward coast of Oahu so if it's going to be sunny anywhere on Oahu, it'll tend to be there!

Of course, having said that, we're having thunderstorms over the islands right now and Oahu and Kauai are getting drenched. Expected to last 2-3 days.

Aulani is in a drier area of the island of Oahu. Normal trade showers generally don't get out that far, but they do receive rain. Last year we did have a rain storm that was so severe that the nearby Waimanalo Gulch landfill overflowed and sent gunk down into the ocean. The lagoons at Ko Olina had to be shut down while trash was removed from the waters.

Ko Olina is a not a city, but a resort/development name. It is located in the city of Kapolei so using the zip code 96707 would be the correct one to use for weather web sites.

We were just there in December. Everyday, it was PERFECT and gorgeous at Aulani. As soon as we drove anywhere else...clouds and rain. It was so cold at Hanauma Bay, we were completely covered head to toe with our towels (had to leave after an hour, kept pouring on us).

We were just there in February and the weather was great at Aulani. I think it rained once and not for very long. It was kind of cloudy one day but not all day. There were a lot of rain showers in the mountains but noticed that the closer you got to the coastline, it cleared up. Made for some enjoyable hikes and beach time.
