Hello!

We are so excited to be taking our 5 year old son on his first cruise (Disney, of course) but are slightly apprehensive about cruising with un-vetted strangers. Though we both "pass" for straight (everyone assumes we're sisters or friends), we're very open about who we are. Our son is pretty charming (if I do say so myself) and we've honestly never experienced any overt homophobia. My gut says we'll be just fine on our cruise - we'll have the time of our lives. Maybe all this worrying is just worst-case-scenario planning?

Anyway, I'd love to hear the experiences of other glbt families who have been on Disney cruises!!! The magical, the unfortunate - please! Spill it!

Can't wait to hear your stories!

No personal experience, but I pay attention to this since my sister-in-law is a glbt family. I have never heard of issues on Disney cruise line itself but you really need to be careful about the islands you visit. Some islands are friendly some are outright hostile (i.e. Jamaica.) You might want to research the islands you are visiting.

We started cruising on DCL with our three kids in 1999 and have never had an issue, They did many cruises as preteens and teens and never once had an issue. DCL is very gay friendly and we have found the people who cruise with them to be very liberal and accepting. Of course you may have someone who is otherwise, but you will face that anywhere. The best way to get a feel for the people you are cruising with is to join the cruise meets thread for your cruise. be open and honest and you will soon know if it matters to them or not.

We are taking our son to his third Disney Cruise next month, we have never had any problem with anyone on the ship. We find group meet on FB so we get to talk to before each cruise, so we already know bunch of people before sailing. You don't have to worry a thing.

We've gone on two Disney Cruises in the last couple of years, met a few rainbow families each time, and nobody had any complaints.

I would think that your biggest concern might be the possibility of being assigned to a dinner table with a family who turns out to be less than comfortable with you. So I definitely think it would be good to join the Facebook group & Disboard group for your trip so you can find some potential table-mates. But rest assured, Disney will take good care of you if it turns out that you need to switch tables for any reason!

Not LGBT but I did hear one report where someone's dinner mates were down right awful. Luckily they asked to be moved but the person reported back they ended up being moved to a terrible table right next to the staff doors. I said it was their payback from the crew for complaining about being sat with an LGBT couple.

If that happens (which that was the only report I had ever heard of) just tell your staff. Disney does not stand for it and will make sure you are well taken care of.
