Today is Rachel's eighth birthday! Unfortunately, she was not able to make it to school for the morning announcements (where they announce all the birthdays) but she did go to school for the afternoon, and at 1:00 I came in with cupcakes and a special show and tell item for the class to see: our pinbags! We explained about pin collecting and the teacher invited the kids up in small groups to go through the pages (with Rachel hovering over them saying "don't touch the pins...just look!"....lol)
Anyway, as the kids were ooohing and ahhing over the pins (which was just so cool to watch, I mean, they just loved them!!!) the teacher told me that her fiance had collected some Olympic pins recently and has a lanyard, and that she had one Mickey Mouse pin, and that they had a special pin case at home. This made the next surprise even more special....
After all the kids were done looking at the pins, we announced that Rachel had a special pin to give to the teacher. Judith has been nice enough to trade with us for the Minnie teacher pin, which Rachel presented to her teacher. Her teacher was so pleased! She put the pin on right away, and walked around the semi-circle of kids to show them all. More oooohs and ahhhhs followed.
Rachel, wearing her paper birthday crown, was so gloriously happy that I wanted to cry. And to watch those kids look over the pins ("Ooooh...I looooove Boo!" "Did you see that Captain Hook pin? Coooool!") was just so great.
So thanks to Judith for making Rachel's birthday extra special, and thanks to all of you that have traded pins with us that made 23 second graders oooh and aaah!!
