Race Reports/Kudos/Encouragement - Nov 22 - 27

Wow, everyone did such great runs this week!! Congratulations!!

Did the Dana Point Turkey Trot 5K Thanksgiving morning. This was my very first 5k and first foot race ever.

The poor 10K runners had to make their way during a torrential downpour, but it let up nicely prior to my Masters 5K. Just a light sprinkle at the start, then it stopped and the sun peeked out a bit by the time I finished.

Because I messed up both my knees 7 weeks into my training, I had decided to walk this event. The day before the race, I decided to go with 15 minute sets, so I started with a 5 minute quick walk, then a 5 minute fast walk, then a 5 minute run. I was a bit worried about doing the run, since the orthodpedic doctor had advised me not to run again. On the final run, my right knee started to hurt just a bit, but the finish line was in sight, so I kept going. Seems to be mostly ok today. Really, it's just the muscles in my upper legs that are really in pain today. That's what I get for not making them do anything for 5 weeks (since the knee injury), then forcing them to move very quickly for 3.1 miles!

So, I was hoping to get as close to a 15 minute mile as I could, so I'd know how much I had to shave off to meet the 5K pacing requirement for the WDW Circle of Life event this January. When I crossed the finish line, it said 46:32, and I though, "Gosh, I've got to knock a minute and a half off of that." Then, I realized my timer watch hadn't gone off and that reminded me that the time on the big clock was the overall race time and not my time. So, I was pretty sure I'd more than met my goal. Later, I found the guy with the computer (and have since verified with the posted results online) and my time was 44:07!!!

I'm SOOO happy with that! Means I can do the WDW 5K and come in under time! Whoo Hooo! I placed 1333 out of 1685 in my race. Not too shabby for a first timer with knee issues, huh? :cool2:

Can't wait for WDW in January!! :thumbsup2

Congrats everyone on your races!

Here is my race report from the Flying Feather 4 Miler on Thanksgiving day in Dublin, Ohio.

Well Packet pick up went off without a hitch. Walked in and got my shirt and my little bag of goodies. When I say little there wasn't really anything in it, but my number and a coupon for the store I was standing in.

On to race day. Got to the parking lot (And I use that term loosely) at about 8am. We then walked instead of taking the shuttle (which there were plenty of) to get loose and avoid closing up the stroller. Got up to the start area about 20 after and was hanging out. On my way to the restroom I saw a lady with a bag that I thought had WISH on it. So I used the restroom and then went and grabbed the family and started looking for Diane. Saw the bag again (This time I was sure it said WISH on it) and finally chased her down. :cool1:

Had a nice talk with Diane and her family and friends and it made the time fly by. (My toes were Frozen) Told my family good bye and then walked to the start with Diane and just like that we were off.

So I started out felling like I was going pretty fast. I was passing people left and right (People were passing me too) and somehow totally missed the first mile marker. I looked down and my time was around 14 minutes. I thought I either missed that first marker or man I'm going slower than usual. I then see the second mile marker about 18 minutes in and was pretty happy. I kept my pace up the rest of the race and finished in 36:41 or right around 9:11 per mile. The course is a nice run through the local metro park and it's all pavement unless you are dodging people via the grass on each side. It's a nice place to run.

So after I finished I walked through looking for anything. Water, Gatorade, anything. I found the water and a few bananas. I then got my medal in which someone actually gave me this year. Then it was off to get my wine. I then found some more bananas and the smallest bagles you've ever seen.

I had a really good time meeting Diane and talking to her. It was cool to meet someone whom I've talked to online and put a face with the name. I must say that was the highlight of my race this year.

Because I'm local I may do this race again next year or I may look at one of the other local races. It is hard to beat wine a shirt and a medal for $30-$35 so we'll see.

Great race report! Glad you got to hook up with Diane -- meeting other WISHers is always my favorite part of a race.

On to December -- and Disney!!!!!

Good job WISH Team!

Thanks for the reports!

Magix, Congrats good job and on bad knees. :scared1: Glad it worked out well.

Ed, forgot to say I'm sorry about that missing body glide. All I can say is OUCH! I know your pain.

Chris and Diane, good job. I'm glad you got to meet with each other.

Wow, we had some speedy WISHers running this past week! I wasn't quite as fast, but I'm still pretty happy. :woohoo:

Ran the Gobble Jog 10K last Thursday and beat last year's time. That was my goal, even if it was by just a few seconds. I'm pleased since I took off four months this summer for my knee and unrelated surgery.

Garmin said 1:05:52, pace 10:33, but official time says 1:06:02, pace 10:38. Still better than last year. Last year it was 1:08:08, pace 10:59. They only had a timing mat at the finish, I guess I should have moved myself up closer to the start. DH ran it in 53:06, pace 8:33. He was a tad disappointed, but still that gets him a chip for the Peachtree and I'm happy cause I'll probably get in the first group behind the timed runners again this year. I really want to run the Peachtree cause I had to give my bib away last year cause of my surgery.

Here we are in action -

I'm 189 and DH is 188. I'm looking a little hippie in my first pic, but all is good. :hippie:

Congratulations to all the WISHers who raced this week/weekend. It was a busy week here!

Wendy - You did it! Sounds like a very chilly run.

Jeff - your race sounded so fun. I like that the cost was low the the concept was different than your typical race.

Chris - glad you got to meet Diane. Great picture together!

Magix - good job! I hope your knees heal up soon.

Ed - congrats on your half! Sounds like you had an amazing experience at the finish. Those are the best kinds of races - the ones that give you the goose bumps of excitement.

Amy - great job on your 5K. Sounds like a HUGE event, wow! Good luck with your half coming up!

jbucci - nice work on the PR!

Shan - congrats to you and your DH! Good job on your time, too!

My husband and I ran The Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam 11K on Thanksgiving morning. I really enjoyed it. It was a trail run and I've never run a race on anything but sidewalks and paved streets before. So, I wasn't able to push myself as fast as I would have liked but still had a time that I was happy with. Running through the tunnels was something else. They are tall rocky caves that go through the mountains. Some of them got pretty dark because they were longer and the Garmins don't work inside any of them. It was an out and back course, the turnaround was right at Hoover Dam. Since it was out and back, we ran through the tunnels 12 times.

The race distance was 11K which ends up being 6.82 miles. I finished in 1:05 with a 9:35 pace. My husband finished in 52:46 with a 7:46 pace. He placed 3rd in his age group.

Here's a few photos from the Six Tunnels race. These tunnels are former railroad tunnels used in the 30's when shipping supplies to the building of Hoover Dam.

Here's one of the tunnels, you can see another tunnel right past it.
This pic is borrowed, I did not take it. Just wanted to give you an idea what they look like.

Oh my gosh! My friend from Arizona was telling me about the half marathon they have there in March -- How cool!!! Congrats on conquering the trail.

I kept putting off reporting on this until I downloaded the adorable photos of the turkeys in this race -- (I'm guessing) a mom and daughter dressed in full-body turkey suits. Very cute! As I can't seem to find my camera right now... on to the race report!

My son and I did this Thanksgiving Day race while vacationing at the Outer Banks. It is in its 13th year and very popular -- so popular in fact that I had to mark my calendar the day registration opened to make sure we got in. The race is held in Duck NC and sponsored by the Advice 5 Cents Bed and Breakfast. It winds through beach streets and by the sound. Great event for all ages, sizes, and speeds -- lots of snacky breafast food at the end and a large cup of beer for all the of-age finishers. My DH drank mine and said it was very tasty (from a local micro-brewery, we think). Don't know my time -- and don't really care. It was more about enjoying the day with my son -- and a lovely day it was.

Next weekend is a trip to Randleman for my 3rd "Run to Victory Half Marathon." (God willing.) It must be race season...
