:jumping1: GO! WISH Team GO! :jumping1:

Lots of races this weekend! GO WISHERS!!!! :cheer2:

I didn't make it to my race, my chair is still broken.:sad1:

Good Luck to Everyone tomorrow. pixiedust:

syko, I was just wondering why I hadn't seen you at the Iron Girl in Clearwater! I only saw one hand crank chair and she didn't look familiar. That's too bad about your chair.

I saw another WISHer on the course but didn't say hi because she had earbuds in. I'm not sure who it was!

Syko!!! :sad1: sorry about missing the race!

Allison!!! Congrats!!!

Maura, Carrie & Scott, Jim & Lily.... CONGRATS!!!! :stitch: <<-- not a martian but an alien!?!?!?

Good luck and have tons of fun to those racing on Sunday!!!! :cheer2:

I did make the last minute decision to run the Martian Half Marathon in place of a scheduled 10 mile LR this weekend. It also provided me with the chance to see Carrie (wtpclc), Scott, Lily (TigerLily03) and Jim (jims2cool)--and our bestest cheerer in the world--Diane (DianeL)

So I signed up on race day at 6:30 am. It was cold, but not brutal. Nice running conditions, and the sun did come out. Heading over to the start area, I saw the other guys emerging from their car--perfect timing! I waited in the portalet line with them for a bit and then deiced to head to front part of the start line.

Let me say here that while I intended in some way to treat this as a LR, I also know that I am somewhat competitive and also, more importantly, have little to no sense of pace! My previous 1/2 was Disney (2:01:14) and I do have a goal this year to break 2:00 The gun went off and though a fairly big race, it wasn't too long before I was comfortably running. Which is what I did......for 13.1 miles.

Carrie had said DIane would be at mile 4 and she was, with a great big sign. Yeah! I had no clue what the sign said--I tend to not pay attention to my surroundings while I race---but it didn't matter. I stopped off to give her a hug and headed on my way.

The course is fairly flat, and has a long out and back stretch on Hines Drive, a scenic road that has some little parks on it (I think--like I said, I don't take in all my surroundings!)--which was dry, thank goodness. If you ever listen to a Detroit traffic report, you will inveitable hear "HInes Drive is closed due to flooding!"

Two gel breaks, a couple of brief water stops in between, one stop to pick up a dropped glove and that was it. Hit the turnaround, came back by Diane and headed off Hines Drive for the remainder of the course in park like area behind a local CC.

Headed up the finishing stretch (a parking area where they actually let people park!) and saw the clock---WHA?

Finish time (clock) 1:51:23.....chip time 1:50:10 !!!!!!

Got my finsiher medal, water, food (muffin, bagel, banana, and later pizza) and headed back tot he course to wait for Carrie and Scott. Saw them come in and then we waited for Lily and Jim, while cheering on other finishers.

I finished 3rd in my age group, picked up my little martian lighted key chain award, said goodbye to the crew and threaded my way carefully through the people (the kids race start was from the parking lot exit--the only logistical bit that seemed to need some tweaking)

All in all, a wowzer race, and not expected. And now that I have met one of my goals for the year, I can work on my second----enjoy the races more. So DL 1/2 will be for fun, not for "glory".

Maura

CONGRATULATIONS Maura! :cool1: :dance3:

Sometimes it's the ones you don't plan for that give you the best surprises. And isn't it great to have one of the goals for the year complete? :woohoo:

Jackie

Congratulations Maura! I don't have much more to add to Maura's report. It was a fantastic event and always special to share with other WISHers. Diane, your cheering us on was quite a highlight! Thanks to you and DH. Jim and I were at the same pace so I had company along the way. That made the event quite enjoyable. There was Gu and Gatorade/water offered along the course. Seemed like a good amount of porta potties. Everything seemed to flow quite smoothly. Seeing Scott, Carrie and Maura at the end was such fun. As Maura mentioned, the parking lot logistics were a bit stressed, but all in all a great event.

I had a half marathon (Great Bay, in Newmarket NH), I had a course PR but not a PB. Tough course, lots of hills, but got it done. Sunblock worked fine on my arms and legs, but I sweat it all off my face and now look like a lobster-racoon mix! Blistered again, dont know what else to do, have tried 7 different brands of socks, 2 brands and 4 styles of sneakers, have bodyglided, vaselined, put goengo pads in my sneaks, used nothing (all at different times)...never blister in training, but always blister in races...AARRGGHH! Also, this time had severe cramping, have had minor before, but this was rough, one cramp dropped me to the ground (how embarassing!) Wow, kinda whiny huh? It wasn't THAT bad! Nice shirts (blue for the guys, pink for the girls...but I got blue so it would fit) and finisher medals, love that bling!
