Race Reports/Encouragement/Kudos for March 8th and 9th!

Part 2 of the Dino Dash 3K (at our local zoo)

As Bill said, we got to the zoo with plenty of time to spare. We had to get our chips, feed Timmy, get bibs on everyone, and still had a few minutes before lining up. Once at the start, Bill moved up toward the middle. I had Timmy in the jogger, and Billy wogging with me, so we lined up at the end.

The first part of the course was on a dirt road that took us to the back entrance of the zoo. We were moving at a decent pace for us, although dodging all the puddles and muddy patches in the road with the crew was a bit challenging. Bill did lap us - he was coming out of the zoo as we were going in...

Once we got in, there were animals everywhere. The handlers had a number of them out right next to the course. I figured we weren't going to set any speed records :rotfl2: so we took our time and enjoyed chatting with the sloth, the parrot, the baby alligator, the deer that stuck his nose through the fence at us... you get the idea. Billy was having a blast stopping and meeting the animals, so I didn't push him to run until he was ready.

Oh, and the whole focus of the race was to showcase their new Planet Dinosaur exhibit. That was awesome!!!! They had a bunch of lifesize dinosaurs that moved their heads and made noises, and one even dribbled water out of its mouth as it was "drinking" (that was Billy's favorite one). We spent way too much time in that exhibit!

We headed out of the zoo and saw Bill waiting for us (he had already finished and was coming back for Billy). The two ran on ahead while Timmy and I walked quickly. Bill and Billy were just a bit ahead of us, and I got to cheer Billy on at the last little turn around on the main road. Once I got past the turnaround, I spotted a very sweet longtime friend (she was actually my mentor teacher when I started teaching, and was also my bridesmaid) that I hadn't seen in a couple years. She was walking back to her car while I was still trying to finish. Of course I had to stop and chat with her and catch up for a couple minutes, and introduce her to Timmy. So, after we set up a lunch date, I decided to meander to the finish...:lmao: Bill and Billy were waiting for me as I crossed the line at a whopping 36+ minutes. :woohoo:

The funny part was that with all the stopping, I didn't finish last - there was another group of ladies that we had been chatting with in the zoo that was also stopping at each animal exhibit. Another funny - this very nice older gentleman that came in last place actually finished FIRST in his age group (he was 76.) :goodvibes

All in all, it was a great race! Billy had a wonderful time for his first "long" race (not a kid's race), and I got to not only enjoy the zoo with my boys, but also catch up with an old friend. There will be other races to work on speed and PR's, but this one was definitely very special. :cloud9:

Bill and Lynnda, what a wonderful race!! You definitely have an budding runner in Billy! How wise you are not to push...well, except Timmy, that is.. :lmao: !!
Erin, That was an awesome pace for recovering from being sick and having to deal with HILLS!

Oh, and I wouldn't be doing that DE race anyway, NO MEDAL!! :goodvibes

Congrats to everyone on their events this weekend. I decided at the last minute (literally...was registering about 5 minutes before the start) to do a local 5k fun run. It was to raise money for the family of a local high school soccer coach who died recently of cancer. Lots of people out there for the race. Since it was a fun run it was unofficial, but I did the 5k in 23:47! I haven't been that fast in a long time.

My wife was walking the 5k with the kids in the jogging stroller, so I went back out on the course to finish up with them. My 3year old (almost 4 year old now) DD and I ran the last 200m together. When we crossed the finish line she said she won, she wanted her medal, and where's Woody and Mickey? I guess she's done too many Disney races

Congrats to everyone for PR's and having a great time!

Did the Kidney Foundation 5K on Saturday -was quite cool and very windy! Gathered with other folks behind one of the tents to get out of the wind. Was well organized and we met some very nice people while waiting.

When it was time to line up, Patrick and I walked over, I left him in his range and continued back to the walkers. Started talking to another lady and we wound up walking it together. I've been having problems with my left shin cramping up and having to stop but managed to keep moving this time. Did start to hurt about half way but changed my stride and it eased up. Now to figure out that stride from the beginning. :)

Been a bit depressed that I was a little slower than last time. Don't know if it was weather, yacking the entire way or just me. But did finish and trying to concentrate on that. There's always next time right?

GREAT job, Paul!! So nice to be able to sign up at the last minute and then PR!!! :woohoo:

Liz, you did good! It was for a great cause and you FINISHED!! Next time is gonna be MINNIE, right?? :goodvibes

Lou:

I am in awe of your great time in the CR Half! That beats my 2006 PR there by about 11 minutes.

I tried to warn you about the killer hill at mile 6, not a fun time at all. The last 1/8 of a mile is up hill to the finish. I remember feeling like I was piggy-backing someone up that incline with me. It was tough. Like you, I went out fast. I remember my first mile was sub 7 and the second was sub 8. Then reality set in that I needed to pace myself.

The 2006 race was a little warmer (only by a few degrees). However it poured rain the previous night into the morning of the race. It stopped literally minutes before the start, we did get some sprinkles here and there, but not too bad. Of course there were huge puddles and mud everywhere to avoid.

I am sorry the medal and other perks were not as nice as other races. This IS Wilmington you know.

I am glad you can add this one to your list and that it is a PR. I plan to run it next year and get a new PR there, hopefully beating the new one I set in WDW in January. ( I have pretty lofty goals! :thumbsup2 )

By the way, just a minor correction to the Caesar Rodney story. He rode on horseback from Dover, Delaware to Philadelphia (not Wilmington to Philadelphia) that is a much l-o-n-g-e-r distance. Everything else was accurate.

Congratulations again! I look forward to running in Philly with you.

Howard

Liz, you did good! It was for a great cause and you FINISHED!! Next time is gonna be MINNIE, right?? :goodvibes

I actually have another 5K in April and then the Minnie. I am so looking forward to that and meeting everyone in person! :cool1:

NKF5K Report
Yes it was COLD and it was Very windy..
As Liz mentioned we stayed warm by huddling with new friends in the lee of a tent near the porta potty ranks.
After line up, where I optimistically chose the front of the 11-14 min group, we waited for the countdown.
Due to the relatively small size of the field, about 1000 runners/walkers, the start went rather smoothly. No shuffling in place, waiting to cross the line, and hoping you had space to actually stride in the next mile..
Nope, started right out into a fast walk, then a jog. I started the garmin as I crossed the line and glanced at it occasionally over the first few minutes.
I had been doing interval training on our treadmill, and had been running 1 minute, walking 3, as the Penguin decrees. I was feeling good that morning, though, and ran most of the first mile, turning in my best 1 mile time yet at 9:47. I slowed to a fast walk a few times, but kept pace with a couple and a few other runners. As I finished the 2nd mile in less than 10 mins as well, I knew I was having a truly GOOD DAY! Running through Epcot is great and while I had to walk a few more times over the bridges and such, I managed to hold onto the sub 10 min pace, and completed 3.14 miles on the Garmin in a PR of 30:42 !! (Official Time was 30:35)
I'm thinking I did OK, as my previous time at the AK 5K on Marathon Weekend was a 37:45 or so. This being my first official time, it feels pretty good.
Now I have to see if I can hold that pace for longer events, and work on training myself to do it for the 10K we have planned in April, and the ToT 13K in October. Then I will be ready for the WDW half ! Dare I shoot for a 2:10:00 first 1/2 Marathon??? I think I will.
Thanks to all for the encouragement and the well wishes !
It would be a lot harder to train, without the challenges of the monthly competition...

Oh, yeah...

Great report!! FANTASTIC time!!! :woohoo: Keep on following JB's advice and you will do well! :cool1:

So, let me take a guess..you are Patrick of the twoWDWfools team of Liz and Patrick??

Lougridis -- my husband ran the CR half - marathon as well, ran it about 2 hours and 15 minutes I believe. Yes, he said it was so surprisely hilly and gusty and cold winds. I have to show him your write-up report.

Thanks for posting. He's planning on doing the other one in Del. on May 19 too.
