:jumping1: GO! WISH Team GO! :jumping1:

Well, I guess I get to be the first who does a report on the Mini Marathon this weekend in Indy.

Before we can race we have to eat, and eat we did. We had a WISH meet at the Old Spaghetti Factory and we had 16 WISHers total. It was a good time and the food was both good and cheap, which is always a plus. I'm sure some of the folks who took pictures will get some posted somewhere.

I was going into the race looking to do a PR and hopefully break down into the 87:00's. The training had gone well and the course was looking good for a PR. In the end it didn't happen and I ran a sort of disappointing race. I would love to blame the weather, it was 37 (38 with wind chill) at the start with winds gusting up to 27mph. We started into the wind but turned out of it pretty early so while not ideal it wasn't at fault for my poor time.

I got into the corrals a bit too early and just about the time I figured out I needed to make one more bathroom stop before the start it was too late. This means I had to stop to use a restroom on the course which pretty much killed my chance at a PR but there was no way around it. That cost me about a minute. Then I got a side stitch that I just couldn't run out. I don't know what caused it, but while I can usually run them out pretty quickly (quarter of a mile tops), this one stuck around for almost 2.

Once that was gone and we were past the speedway and heading back home I got a little bit of a second wind that clawed back some of my lost time and I finished in 90:37. Not a bad time all things considering but not a PR and out of the top 500 (660 actually).

The city was great and the course well marked (clocks at every mile) and the water stops were very well run. I didn't bring any gel with me which was a mistake and I really could have used some. They didn't have any on the course (unless I missed it) and I think that was a mistake. I think any half should have at least one stop with some gel or beans or something.

The side stitch I had was with me almost my whole way around the speed way so I didn't get to enjoy it (the stitch started a little before we entered the track) but it wasn't what I thought. Maybe it was the metal distraction of my pain but since it was so large it kind of seemed like it went on forever and, while a good addition to the course, just made you feel slow.

The weather was out of everyone's control and I have no one but me to blame for my bathroom timing and lack of gel so to say I have unfinished business at this race is an understatement and one I will be correcting in the future eventually. There are other states I need to get first.

I hope everyone else had a bit better race, even considering the weather.

Not a whole lot to add to what Frank said... dinner Friday night was great. Really enjoyed seeing old WISH friends and meeting new ones.

The wind was miserable Saturday morning. We got to the start about an hour early, checked our bags, made a portapotty trip. Entered the corral (S) a little after 7:00 (race start was 7:30) and met up with the other WISH members. Once the race began, it took about 20 minutes to cross the start line.

DH, DD, and I were doing this race together, so it was a challenge to find a pace that kept everyone happy. Ultimately, DD was the deciding factor, since it was her first race, and she was nursing an ankle and thigh injury.

We loved the section at the speedway, but slowed WAY down to take pictures, so ended up walking a good portion of that. Also used the real bathrooms there. The surface was nice, but the banking was noticeable, so I think if you had any sort of IT band or knee injury, it could really be a problem by the time you were done there.

Finished in 2:50:42. Agree that the course was great - VERY flat, very well marked. Lots of water and Gatorade. I had my own gels, so I wasn't looking for those. I didn't think there was a lot of community support, other than the volunteers, but there were so many runners that it didn't really matter. And LOTS of bands. Maybe not GOOD bands, but at least there was music. We didn't take advantage of the festival afterward - it was just too cold, and we wanted to get back to the hotel and warm up. Got our free fruit, cookies, and water, and left. But I'd do this race again. I know people who got a PR, even with the wind, and I'd love to give it a shot.

This was my third, and best, mini-marathon. The weather was pretty bad, but for the first time I was able to "get in the zone" and the miles just flew by. The speedway is always difficult for me because it just seems like you are there forever.

I continue to be amazed at the level of organization at the finish. The simple touch of giving each runner a grocery bag to hold the snacks is so helpful and I wish more races would do that.

I was thrilled to cut 6 minutes from my former PR. I finished in 2:47:40, so I'm not exactly speedy, but it was a great time for me.

Don't forget to go to the Indy Star website at www.indystar.com to watch yourself cross the finish line!

A couple of Indy pictures:

What time did you guys get to the family reunion area? I stuck around until about 11:15 but I had to head back. I was pretty freezing and needed to get back on the road.

Sorry I missed the post-race meet up. We'll have to do it all again at Wine & Dine.

Frank, that is what happens when you are so speedy! I'm thinking we got to the post-race area about 11:30/11:45. I'm impressed that you waited so long and sorry we missed you- it sure was cold!

I'm pretty sure it will be a lot warmer after WnD. I'm always at the back-of-the-pack though, and at WnD my DD Erin will be joining me, doing her first half. We will probably be stopping for pictures along the way. Since 10PM is my usual bedtime I don't know how late I will be hanging out after the race, although that is Erin's prime time. Hopefully we can all enjoy the afterrace feast (aka taste and sip!).

If only I had waited an extra 15 minutes. After I finished I went back to the hotel for a quick shower and was back at the reunion area around 9:45. I walked around a bit and kept coming aback to check. I was getting pretty hungry and cold so I called it quits at 11:15. I was even thinking I should wait until 11:30 but my stomach over ruled my head.

I have a feeling the adrenaline from the race will over-ride any of the tiredness for W&D.

Frank - We finished around 10:45 and wandered over that way, but didn't see you and figured you'd decided it was too cold. We probably were in the same area but just missing each other. We finally decided nothing over there was as good as a warm room and a hot shower, so we headed back to the hotel for a nap and lunch.

Frank and Jackie, sorry we missed you post-race, but I never fault anyone for leaving (and Frank you were unbelievably chivalrous to return and wait around that long!) After Disney, I typically drag myself to the bus, so you both went "above and beyond" in my books.

As for the Indy Mini... Funny thing is that I wrote a long race report at about 3AM on Monday, then lost it as I was trying to post it. When will I learn to do those things in Word and paste them in!?! Let's see how much I can remember...

As usual, I loved the cold (and really didn't mind the wind -- though there was a lot of it). I walk slower now than I have in years past, and I seem to get overheated a lot more quickly, so the cold serves me well. On the flights there and back, I kept overhearing runners say how the weather had been brutally hot some years (Wonder if they've done Disney?), so I was very blessed that this was a cool year. I was not trained enough to attempt a PR, so I began the race with no expectation other than to build my confidence and to get a medal. I am hopeful that I can do a little better than that next race. The race is truly remarkable in the number of entrants and the seemingly endless bands and entertainment. I heard every sort of music you can imagine -- and even saw some square dancers! It surpassed my expectations and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys big races.

The reason I'm writing this report, though -- the thing I REALLY want to share -- is that I was so wrong not to expect more from Indianapolis itself. I expected another boring downtown, and instead I'm quite certain I could have stayed an extra day or two and still not seen everything within walking distance of my downtown hotel. I was surrounded not just by restaurants and shopping -- which is convenient -- but by more monuments and museums than I could squeeze into my long weekend.

Besides the car ride to visit the Hall of Fame Museum at the Indy Motor Speedway (and I loved walking the 2.5 mile tour of the track starting at about mile 6 during the race) with a fun group of WiSHers, we walked to the Indiana War Memorial Museum and Monument Circle (which has a Civil War Museum). Because I had a later flight, I also walked to the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art which was next door to both the Indiana State Museum and the zoo that I'd hoped to see but just ran out of time! I took tons of photos -- but kept saying to everyone within earshot that you really had to BE there to appreciate the beauty and enormity of it. What a cool -- and extremely walkable -- city! I am so glad I went.

And it wouldn't be a race report without acknowledging what a wonderful experience it is to be engulfed by such a supportive group of WiSHers -- who cheered me, hugged me, Facebook-ed me, and made me feel a part of the group. I did not realize how much I'd missed that affection and acceptance, and how much I needed the weekend. Thanks to all of you!

Wendy- Glad you had a good experience. I like the camaraderie of the WISH group so waiting around for you guys is no problem at all. Had it been a bit warmer I wouldn't have given up.

As for feeling like you get overheated sooner that is actually probably the case. Back in 2005 when Lance was on Team Discovery they had a bunch of specials around the Tour de France. One of them was a scientific look at exercise and I remember them talking about athletes and how quickly they warm up. I remember that as you become a better endurance athlete, whether it is running, cycling, hiking, walking, or anything else that requires hours of exertion, you body re-calibrates how it cools itself. The cooling mechanisms like sweating and blushing kick in sooner to keep you at a cooler temperature. A common misconception is that the guy in the spinning class or on the treadmill at the gym that is sweating buckets is out of shape, but that is often not the case.

Indy was a cool town. There is a huge Indy contingent on the boards and they have a huge meet there over Labor Day weekend.

Now we all need to figure out what our WISH-designated half will be next spring. After the big group we had in Nashville last year and Indy this year we need to find a half for a big WISH meet next spring too.

Wendy-I've decided I want to move to Indianapolis. We did the Hall of Fame Museum at the Speedway, of course, as well as the Rhythm Discovery Center, and walked around the mall there too. I agree that we you need at least a few days to cover everything.

I don't know how to cross-post, but my race report is over on the May Rebel Alliance thread, page 2 (with pictures!).
