Unfortunately I am not doing the Toronto half -- LTO and had to cancel.

GO WISH to everyone else!!!!!!!!

Decided to run this race, having been a spectator for many years when my DH did it. Their 2-mile race was the very first race event that I ever did--back before I decided to run.

Usual bad night's sleep before a race. This time because the dog was up at 4, while I was aiming for 6! Took two bites of a piece of toast and two sips of a cup of tea. I never feel good eating before an event of any length, and today was no exception. One change I made--I decided to have a gel about 45 minutes before the race started. I haven't tried that before, although the gel was one I have used in the past.

Got to the race 45 minutes early and sat in the car for a bit. (Got a new Camaro for the weekend!) Headed on over to the start line and was able to find a patch of sun to keep warm--temps at start were shy of 50. Great weather for running, but cold before you start.

Last year's race had about 750 people. Not sure about this year. Some fast women run in my age group (F50-54), not that I was thinking of placing!

My only other 10k time was 54:50, and I don't really have a strong mileage base since I am only running twice a week. So even though I have been doing speedwork, I wasn't sure how this would translate to time. I was hoping for 52:00.

Race started and off we went. Course is basically flat, and the first two miles are basically repeated as miles 5 and 6. The second/last mile though go deceptively up an incline-slight, but noticeable. I forgot my watch--what else is new--and relied on splits at 1-3-5 mile to gauge my pace.

Decided I would do water at 2-4-6, since they were supposed to have water at each mile. This did NOT go as planned--seems like fewer stations than what I remember seeing in the past. I ended up getting water once at ~3.5 miles. I took it at a walk, as I ususally do, and then off again.

I felt reasonablt good for most of the race, although the last mile and a half I could feel myself slowing down (and my stomach bugging me a little--maybe should have skipped the gel?) Also had the usual mental dialogue of "Why am I doing this again? and what ever makes you think you could do a marathon". (I know, they're different races, but still) First mile 8:05 (little too fast?) 3rd mile 24:25-ish, 5th mile-41:30-ish (I can't remember) and finish in 51:16 clock time.

Official chip time: 51:16 (8:16) [UPDATE:I was originally shown as 50:52 (ave. 8:12 pace), but the posted results now show 51:16.]

Got my medal (top 100 femle finishers, I think), water, powerade, juice, banana and a chili sample (Yum!) and then went to Starbucks to get a coffee. Saw the results posted--I was 6th out of 13 in my age group. (Winner in my group ran a 42, I think!)

I'm glad I did this race. It's another of those races that my family members have done that I never thought that I could do. And, of course, have some bling! I'll use this result to help me target for the fall (Race for the Taste)

Now time for a shower and maybe a nap!

:woohoo: Go, Maura! :woohoo: Congratulations on your finish. Enjoy your nap!

Well, I have to admit I’m a little disappointed in my race. I only made my “C” goal which was a PR. My finish was 2:05:17. I was hoping to make it under 2 hours.

We went to the race expo on Friday night, about an hour before it closed. This was a good time to go, as there were no lineups to pick up bibs, and there weren’t too many people around. The expo was held in Max Bell Arena this year, which was much better than the previous venue, where there was little room to move. I have to say, I think the shirts were nicer last year. This year’s shirt was a one colour (red) compared to the 3 colour and better looking shirts from last year.

I was up at 4am on race morning, and my fueling and hydration were all according to plan and what has worked for me previously. I had a bowl of cereal at 3 hours before start, 2-3 cups of coffee and a bottle of sport drink, all consumed no later than 2 hours before the race, and no further drinks after that. We were just a few minutes late leaving the house, but I wasn’t too concerned, as there was some extra time built in. My plan includes a last porta-potty stop before the start, so when we arrived I lined up for that. Unfortunately I picked a slow line and it took several minutes to make it through (about 15-20). This left me very little time before the start, and I had to rush to the start. I was lucky enough to spot the 2 hour pacer, so I jumped off to the side to remove my warm up clothes. When I turned back though, he was gone – most likely pushing his way forward. At this point, the race was starting, so I was pretty much stuck where I was. It took me about 4 and a half minutes to get to the start line.

Since it was congested at the start (rant: why do some people walking feel like they need to get as close as possible to the start on a chip timed race with generous time limits) I just went with the crowd and tried to not work too hard to jump around people. The first km was done in about 5:55 and I was happy with that. It was so crowded that I missed the next 4 km markers (and missed several more throughout the race). My splits through 6km were all right on pace, so I was still about 15 seconds behind overall because of the first km. Things seemed to be going according to plan.

Through 13km, things were going fairly well, although I could feel some slowing, and was working to remain focused and keep the pace. Soon after that though, I got a side cramp that I couldn’t get rid of. I tried to breathe on the opposite side, ran with my hand in the air, but nothing worked. I eventually decided that I would have to take a walk break, and that’s where I really lost my momentum. I just couldn’t pick up the pace again after that. I knew then, that what I really needed was more base miles in training. The last third of the race is where the additional miles help the most. I resigned myself to the fact that I wasn’t going to finish under 2 hours, so I was trying for under 2:05. I should have pushed just a little harder, but not knowing exactly where the finish line was, made it difficult.

For now it’s some time off, but I will be working on base building over the summer. Since I was over 30 miles per week at the end of training, I’m going to work on maintaining about that level (25-30 mpw) through the summer, and then will begin full marathon training in the fall.

My splits for the race were:

1 5:55
2 5:40 *5
3 5:40 *5
4 5:40 *5
5 5:40 *5
6 5:41
7 5:45 *8
8 5:45 *8
9 5:50 *11
10 5:50 *11
11 5:50 *11
12 5:52 *14
13 5:52 *14
14 5:52 *14
15 6:31 *16
16 6:31 *16
17 5:58
18 5:47
19 6:18
20 6:12
21.1 7:05

Carol Hey...no feeling bad for your new PR! Just remember that at the Donald, (and wasn't that your fist 1/2?) you did 2:10-ish. (I remember because we were shooting for the same time). So you've made a big improvement. You'll get there for sure, I am confident. Sounds like you have a great base to build on for the full training. And I have to say...you are one of my "reference points" for doing the full--someone who is sorta in my category of running. Only now, you're out ahead of me. See, you're a role model!

Yes, this was only my second half, but I thought maybe I had things figured out. :rotfl2:

I'm registering for the full with a 4:15 estimated, so I'm going to work towards that or better through the fall. We'll see you at the start line! :woohoo:
