I'm going to be volunteering at packet pickup for the Cleveland Marathon between 3 and 7 tomorrow and between 2 and 6 on Saturday.

Thanks for the information Frank, I'm planning on heading up to Cleveland tomorrow afternoon. A friends driving me up so I'm not completely sure about what time it will be.

Thanks for the information Frank, I'm planning on heading up to Cleveland tomorrow afternoon. A friends driving me up so I'm not completely sure about what time it will be.

Well, I'll be at Packet pickup on Saturday from 2 until 6 (I'll be the short one) and will be handing out food and drink in the finish line area tomorrow. This is of course if they don't reassign me.

Luckily the first half of the race is going through the nice areas, the second half is a bit rough.

Hi all
Most everything went well this weekend (for the most part). Yesterday, got a little bit of a late start because the friend who was driving me had to work in the morning. He's self employed as a lock smith and right now, he can use any work he can get. We arrived in Cleveland about 4:30. I picked up my bib quickly and easily. And then went over to the expo. I picked up my goodie shirt and goodie bag. It had an OK supply of stuff. A nice tech shirt, 2 pieces of candy, several granola bars, sun screen, Gold bond powder and a few other things I can't remember. On the way out of the expo, I stopped back at registration and ran into Frank (firedancer). It was good to be able to talk to him and put a face with a name. Me and my friend decided to eat dinner at Olive Garden and then stopped at Half Price Books so he could grab some reading material before heading to another friends house to go to bed.

After a too short nights sleep,I got up at 5:00 to eat breakfast and get ready to go to the race. We arrived at the race about 6:30 which game me a good amount of time. The race started mostly on time at 7:00, and I crossed the start line at 7:07. The first mile went relative uneventfully was keeping a good pace 16:08 and felt good. My first minor mistake happened in first half of mile 2. I look down at my watch and see that I'm walking at a 14:00 pace (walking with a group I thought was going slower than that). Once I noticed it I slowed down closer to what I was planning. Course support was very good. I didn't need all of the water I was carrying with me. The crowd support was a bit spotty though. The best crowd support was in a new part of Cleveland (Tremont) for the marathon at mile 3-5 and they had several parties going on and great crowd support even for us back of the packers. At the 10K mat look at my watch and it was 1:38, My 10K time last fall was 1:37:07 with a sprint to the finish and today was all walking. Around mile 7 I stopped briefly with the thought of going to the restroom but they were all full so I kept going. I found an empty portapot at mile 9 and grabbed it. I probably lost about minute there. Miles 10.5 to about 12 are a long half way steep hill. At the top of the hill even though my feet were killing me, I decided to alternate between regular walking and fast walking (I signed up in the walking division and wanted to walk the entire way even if other people weren't). The fast walking actually felt pretty good in short burst because it used a slightly different set of muscles. When I rounded the final corner to the finish I walked as fast as I could to the finish. I finish with a clock time of about 3:34 and I stopped my Garmin at 3:27:55 and 13.21 miles. My goal was between 3:30 and 3:45 so I beat that by a little bit.

The biggest down side right now is that they don't have official results up for me yet (I was hoping to get those results before posting). I've email the race officials so hopefully in a couple of days I will get results. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and encouragement. You really help me do my best.

as always i'm a day late and a dollar short (is that how the saying goes?)

i did the cleveland 1/2 also! Jeremy it sounds like we started around the same time even. i didn't look at the official clock, focusing on getting my Garmin started, but at mile 1 i realized i was behind official time between 7-8 mins. for the first time EVER my Garmin was off on the mileage! at mile 1 it was only registering .76 mile. it seemed to almost catch up a little by the end..weird.

miles 10-11 were the worst! the smell at the beginning of mile 10 encouraged me to pick up my pace! then the uphill...then the WIND! my DD saw me at a corner coming back into downtown (street parallel to finish that we came in on) and told me i looked annoyed. i was..lol.

my biggest complaint would be the literally rough roads of the first 7 miles; and starting the 10k only 15 mins after HM/FM start, i was weeding through 10k folks to get to the start line. other than that it seemed well organized, lots of volunteers at the water stops.

i love the medal though!

firedancer -- were you passing out at the finish? you probably remember me, i looked annoyed....jk. i crossed about 3:11 clock time. oh that's the other puzzler, my official and clock time are the same on the results. would me chip have failed at the start?

Congratulations Oh Mom. You probably saw me. I was the big guy (6'4" tall 318lb) back behind the race walk pacer. I now have times on the web site but like you, my chip time and gun time are the same. I never saw the actual clock at the start. I looked at my results on the Garmin to get an approximate start time. My gun time is showing 3:34:11 which is pretty close and good for my first half. But 6 -7 minutes at the start time put me under my optimistic goal of 3:30. I also needed to weave around 10Kers a little to get to the start line.

and congratulations to you on your first, and i'm sure not your last!
