A late WTG to everyone who raced this past weekend. I "ran away from home" for a cheap weekend in Florida. Snagged a deal at Pop Century, an inexpensive rental car and a local half marathon and got a break from the winter. Not too warm, but at least it was sunny.
Ran the Orlando Extreme Half marathon, which was at the Orlando Wetlands Park in Christmas FL. It was not "extreme", but it was a trail race--actually on a perimeter path/road that was packed dirt/grass. A 2-ish lap course of this nice reserve. Lots of birds, making a great amount of noise, and some neat vultures who were hanging out by the path--perhaps waiting for race casualties?
I was scheduled to run 13 miles at 9:00 mpm this past weekend, and so of course, I ran too fast. But the great news is my IT band, which I had aggravated during a snowy, slushy slog last weekend, and had been giving me trouble even on Thursday, was pain-free! And a first for me, I actually ran part of the race with 1-2 other people who were pretty much running the same pace. I never ususally run with people, but since I was trying to keep this run low key, I just did. Worked out fine. I still tend to run looking at my feet, which in this case wasn't an entirely bad thing since this was a trail.
Finished somewhat under 2 hours, Garmin read 13.44 miles. And since the race was a small, local race, I ended up winning the age group. Got a shirt and medal, and then enjoyed the rest of the weekend. Had a great lunch of Cuban food afterwards near Disney (they were having a pig roast!)
This was a real mental pick-me-up (the no-pain IT band) so I truly enjoyed myself. And the weather this week here is looking mild on a few days, so here's hoping for ice-free, snow-free roads!
