I am squeezing in a 5K Saturday night in Florida before getting on the podcast cruise Sunday. It is the Mayfair 5K in Lakeland, FL. I have been looking at the weather and it will be hot but I'll feel better on the boat knowing I got the race in. At least it will take away some of the guilt at the buffets.:goodvibes

Everyone racing this weekend, enjoy your day out on the course!

Shouting out to Caseydilla, you're gonna rock you triathlon !!!

:cool1::banana: Go WISHers!! Go out there and burn some asphalt!:cool1:

I am doing a charity walk on Mother's Day for Breast Cancer Network Walk to Empower.

Here's my report, sorry it's so long!

I did the Big Lake Half Marathon in Alton NH

Race due to start at 8am, left the house with plenty of time to find the place. Got to the school, got my bib, chip, and t-shirt, that’s all, the goodie bags were just flyers for upcoming races. Tried to use the bathroom, the water was shut off, it was nasty, couldn’t flush and lots of people had been there first, luckily there were porta-potties outside and along the course. Walked to the start line, the day was overcast and low 50’s, just perfect! We lined up wherever we wanted to, no pacers or anything, so I was closer to the front than normal, every little bit helps! Met some really nice runners, and they warned me about the hills. No gun or anything, just a guy shouted “GO” and we were off. About half a mile in, there was a family cheering someone on, they told her “you’re almost there”, had me laughing! I did really well (for me, remember, I am slow) for the first 6 or 7 miles, a lot of it was uphill, but it was gradual, so not too bad. There were clocks at each mile, and I had a good 5K time, a PR 10K and a PR 15K, but wasn’t done yet. Just after mile 7, the road was like a roller coaster, up a hill, down a hill, sharp corner into a hill, and it went like that to about mile 9. There were water stops about every 2 or so miles, until mile 7, then none until 10. I started to blister around mile 4 (only ended up with 2 this time!), but they didn’t get bad until around mile 10. Mile 10 I hit the wall. Hard. I was cramping really bad, the backs of my legs and my calves, I slowed down to barely moving, just really struggling. Got to the water stop, it was a Boy Scout troop. The boys were awesome, calling my number, telling me to keep going, BUT their leader was terrible. I got just past the tables, and I heard him, very clearly, say “she’s wearing the right shirt, dead last”. I’ve always felt that last was ok, (someone has to be last, right?), but it really hurt to hear it the way he said it. If a pick up vehicle had come by at that point, I think I would have quit, luckily none did. I pushed on, first with hurt feelings, then I got mad, who was he anyways, HE wasn’t running, HE wasn’t doing a half marathon, I was! I made it to mile 11, and it got better from there, I worked the cramps out (Tylenol helped) and got my head back in the right place, the hills weren’t as bad, and the last water stop cheered and told me to keep going. A lot of the runners were leaving as I got closer to the end, and they beeped and waved and hollered as they passed me. Finally I could see my daughter waving and then the finish line. They had already pulled the chip mat up, the food was gone, only a few people still hanging around, but they still cheered as I crossed. Not a great finish time, there was a 4 hour limit and I came in 3:48, but I did finish and that’s all that matters, I came in 974, DLF, and there were 153 runners that DNF. We got nice finisher medals, they match the shirt and the bibs. Would I do this one again? Maybe. Lots of hills, but they weren’t “that” bad, running along the lake gave me lots to look at, we even passed a “scenic view” at one point. I’d like to be faster though, so I could have been back for the awards ceremony, the snacks, and the massages that were done before I finished.

Way to go Angie. You beat 153 people! :thumbsup2

Don't let that Boy Scout leader get you down. He clearly wasn't living up to the Scout Law of being ..."helpful, friendly, courteous, cheerful, or kind..."

Use this as your motivation in future training and races.

:rotfl2: Frank! I did enjoy it.

Congratulations on your half, Angie! I hope everyone else had great races.

I competed in my first triathlon on 5/9. The Iron Girl out at Lake Las Vegas. I had no time goal for this, just wanted to finish. My overall time ended up being 1:53, which overall put me around the middle of the pack. I am happy with that. The event itself was a blast and I was sad when it was over. Guess that means I got the tri bug. The swim was what I was worried about most but I got through it just fine. I trained with a tri coach on the swim for the last 3 months. It helped so much. The bike and run went smoothly as I was most comfortable in those areas. Here's some photos from the event that my husband took:

(hard to believe that in Vegas the water was still cold enough for wetsuits)

Today was the Hog's Hunt 25/50K Trail Races in Huntsville State Park. I ran the 25K race this morning, even though I really hadn't quite properly trained for this distance I have been looking forward to this event for the last two months. Last year I ran this race in 4:46:45, a lot slower than I might otherwise have run due to a foot injury which caused me to walk about half the course. My PR for 25K trail runs was set in the Rocky Raccoon 25K (same course for a November race date) at 3:46:26.

This morning I started out walking the first mile with a friend who was walking the complete event. We walked this mile in just under 16 minutes. Then I started running the event on my own. Starting out slow gave me the opportunity to pass quite a few runners steadily during the event. My general goals was to do a run 4 minutes then walk 1 minute schedule, while also walking on the steeper uphill portions. Overall this worked well for me as I ran a comfortable 12-13 minute per mile pace for the first 10 miles. In mile 11 I was running low on water as I got to a water cooler only aid station. Unfortunately, the cooler was nearly empty and no one was around it. I get a few ounces of water and knowing another aid station was about 1.5 miles ahead, I pressed on. (I would later learn they were in the process of bringing water back to the cooler at this time.) As I ran out of water I reverted to my backup plan which was to only walked until I reached the aid station to resupply, which I did after about another half mile. I was feeling pretty good again--for about a half mile--when I get a bad muscle spasm in my inside right calf. I looked down to see a big tight ball of muscle and an "empty" spot between the spasming muscle and the next muscle. I spend some time massaging the muscle and then start walking for a bit, when I feel up to it I start running some more. Another quarter mile and I get another spasm on my inside right thigh. Again stop, massage, walk, and resume running some. I took it a bit easier on my running, but another (maybe) half mile later the calf spasms return stronger. Again with the stop, massage, walk, and start to run. At this point I mix in walking and running based on feel so as to not overstress the right leg muscles any more than I need to and definitely only walk up all hills. That (slowly) gets me to about the 14.5 mile point. From there I try to push my pace a bit to keep up with some runners who had caught me--and I did stay with then for most of the rest of the race until they sprinted to the finish.

I finish in 3:37:48 on my watch, although the official time will be a bit longer as I took my time to pass over the start line (not a chip-timed race), so I figure I came in around 3:39:00. This is a 1 hour plus improvement over last year's injury-affected time and a 7 minute or so PR for me for 25K trail race course.

All in all, I am a bit disappointed in having the muscle spasms keep me from beating 3 1/2 hours, but I can't really complain too much when I set a new PR. Today's weather was fair to warm, but not too warm. The race staff and volunteers did a good job and things seemed to run pretty well. I suppose I am already starting to think about how I can improve for the next time.
