My first Half Marathon took me to Cincinnati for the Flying Pig Half Marathon. I live about an hour and a half from there and thanks to Denny's (Dennyha)Recommendation this was my first attempt at a Half. My Wife and Daughters came with me and we stayed Downtown at a Ramada. We spent Saturday night over to Newport on the Levee. There are a tonof places to eat here, but we chose Jax grill in Gameworks. Call me cheap, but the other places we looked at we would have paid the same price for one person we paid for all of us to eat at Jax. Anyway if you have the chance to go here the view of downtown Cincy and the Ohio River is beautiful. They do have a band playing not to mention an entertainer that was doing Magic.

The expo seemed huge to me and very well organized. I didn't forget my chip this time. :lmao: Disney seemed to be about half the size of this one, but maybe it was just my imagination.

Anyway the race weather was perfect for a runner. It was 45-50 at the start. It wasn't perfect for me as I like around 65, but it was still a beautiful morning. Not a cloud in the sky. So we get to the start and wait and wait...and wait. The race was delayed about 20 minutes because of a fire we came to find out and the had to reroute the Marathon/Half Marathon to get us started.

The race for me started out pretty good. I lined up in the 2:30-2:45 group for the half or so I thought. I was quickly for the first couple miles dodging walkers. Anyway within the first mile you start out behind Paul Brown Stadium then up by Great American Ballpark and then you start to head up the first Bridge and across the Ohio River. I was a little freaked out, but I managed. My time for my first mile was good at 10:56. We were headed into Kentucky now and did a couple miles through there before heading across the other Bridge over the Ohio River and Back into Ohio. I missed the mile 2 marker so my time for mile 2 and 3 was 20:59.

I dove over by the train tracks to do my first potty break and back on the road I went. Nothing much through here at all. Mile 4 including my stop was 10:45.

Mile 5 brought my one and only sighting of my family. This was right by our hotel and had a very nice view of downtown Cincy. I ran across everyone to get to them and give them a kiss and take a picture. Mile 5 took me 10:59.

Mile 6 took me through Downtown and up 7th street. There were a ton of people through here and really throughout the course. I didn't see any holes anywhere and everyone was chearing. With there Pig noses on, Ringing their bells and holding their signs. Thanks to all the supporters by the way. You guys were awesome. Mile 6 took me 10:55.

I at this point realized dude you are drinking too much water and gatorade. I have always trained at a certain time to take a drink and on long runs to do my sport beans at a certain time. When I start racing it's like I throw all this out the window. So I went hey "GOOFY" how about you stop drinking so much and stick with the plan.

Anywho Mile 7 is where it's really starts getting difficult. You really start going up hill for the next 3 miles, but the scenery is so worth it. Somepoint during this trek up the Hills I think it's close to mile 7 you can overlook some water which I think was the Ohio River and see part of Downtown. Really pretty through there. Mile 7 took me 11:27, Mile 8 11:14 and Mile 9 10:25.

Mile 10 was my last rest room break and took me 11:37. After mile 9 is where the Marathon and the Half Marathon split. It was very organized with Huge signs.

DOWNHILL - WOO HOO. Mile 11 was downhill as was most of the rest of the course. I kept thinking you only have a 5k to go. So I did. Mile 11 took me 9:32. I felt like I was flying and at the same time holding myself back. Mile 12 took me 10:20 (There was an out and back through here) Mile 11 and part of 12 were pretty much going down the hills close to where we had just come up and Mile 13 took me 10:40. Again it was a great view coming down the hill because you could see most of Cincy. A very pretty city.

I finished in 2:20:54. I put down 2:45 for my projected finish time. That's what my split was at Disney for the full so I figured it would be between 2:30-2:45. What was weird to me is the course was much more challenging again to me and I thought I pushed myself better and am proud of myself for that. I do realize that not that many finished behind me and in particular in my age group and sex, but oh well. I'm still proud of myself. My family was also proud of me and it was my oldest daughters first time seeing an event like this and she was amazed. She was really proud. They had a sign for me that made me feel great.

The supporters were all over the place and were awesome. The staff was also very helpful. I thought it was a challenging course, but again Disney is my only point of reference here on a long race (Marathon and TOT 13k.)

Sorry to be so long Winded. Hope you enjoyed my report and I can't wait to hear about the Minnie from everyone.:woohoo:

Chris - WTG!

Chris--WTG on the Pig! Sounds like you had an awesome race. Nice job on such a tough course. I agree, it is much more challenging than Disney, especially that stinkin' hill up to Eden Park! I, too, ran the Pig (half) this morning. If I ever come out of hibernation here on the boards, I'm going to try to post a race report. I've been REALLY bad about getting on here to say hi to all my teammates. :sad2:

Krista and I were commenting today on how much the Pig has grown over even the last 3 or so years. I've always thought the Expo, race, etc were very well done and very professional, but we were extra impressed this year. Between the expanded Expo (I agree, I think it was bigger than Disney's this year), the updated course, course officials, volunteers--top notch all the way around. And even with the fire at Mile 22 before the start (by the way, did you even know it was a fire at that point--I was just standing in the corrals like "What the heck?? Are we waiting for stragglers and everyone who didn't get out of bed this morning??), the Pig officials were on their game rerouting the course and starting only 15 or 20 minutes late.

So kudos, Cincy, on a superb race. Definitely my favorite half marathon to date.

And great job, Chris. I wish I woud have stayed up to date on the boards here so Krista and I could have gotten a chance to say hi to you.

Maybe next year, right? :)

Steve

Steve,

No I had no clue what was going on. I run by myself so I kept saying to myself what is going on? That was amazing quick work for them to redo the route that quickly. People around me kept saying I can't believe we are waiting for people to get here. I just wanted to get started, but completely understand.

It would have been cool to meet a fellow Wisher.

I look forward to reading your race review as well.

Hi...I was there also this morning. Walking the 1/2. I trained to do interval, but I had 2 friends who did not train interval and it was their first time out so I said I would stay with them. We averaged a 14.44 mile. I didn't break a sweat so a bit disappointed, but still proud my friends finished.

I did know about the fire, but only because the girl who organizes our trainings during the year told me. She seems to always be in the 'know'.

Chris and Steve...GREAT JOB!

Chris, Glad you enjoyed the Greater Cincinnati area. Living here I often take it for granted.

Chris: Thank you for your detailed report on the Flying Pig Half and on the city. I think DOOD and I will definitely be doing this event next year, in some form or another. It's good to have WISHers' recommendations for both the race & the locale. Your description of the course was cool, too. A kind of mini-travelogue. It really helped me picture the course and its appeal.

I particularly loved your descriptions with "Dude, you are drinking too much water and gatorade" and "Stick with the plan." These are things I say to myself all the time, so I definitely feel a kinship with your experiences. And I think you SHOULD be really proud of yourself. You ran a good race, ahead of your projected time, and pushed yourself. You listened to what your body needed and are becoming a more experienced endurance runner. All great things. And that time is really good, too! :cool1:

Steve: I'm looking forward to your RR, and appreciated your commentary on the Expo. :thumbsup2

Side note: Hey, maybe the Flying Pig could be a WISH mini-meet? I'm sure DOOD and I could be talked into attending....

I was posting when you posted, but wanted to congratulate you on doing what I think is a very hard thing--staying with your friends, despite what you'd trained for. That's a race well done, and you did your friends a great honor IMO.

Congratulations, guys! I'm thinking about doing the Pig one year, ya'll have made it harder to say no.

Congratulations, Buzz teammate!!!! Great job, Chris! :worship: I've done the Pig a couple of times and really love it -- great medal, great premiums, and lots going on for the runners. (Love the idea of the recognition of the runners at the Reds game on Monday, but I've never been able to stay). Sounds like you had a good run and awesome family support -- and a fun time together.

Thanks for sharing your report (which wasn't long-winded!).

(I'll post my Minnie report later. Fun family weekend for us as well.)

Congratulations Chris!!:cheer2: My fellow Buzzieteammateandkeeperofourteamstotals! :thumbsup2 That was an excellent Race Report. I felt like I was right there with you. I am so proud of you and where you have come from. You are such an inspiration to us all. I hope I can make it back to Disney some day to meet all of my teammates! :grouphug:

Great job, Chris!!! Thanks for a great and detailed race report - you did amazing!! I only head down to Cincy for the Taste of Cincy (you see where my priorities lie ;) ) but I am visualizing all those hills in my head and hats off to you!

Way to go everyone. Sounds like a great race.

Buzzie team mate Chris, thanks for the report. Now all you others get your report together for us!

Thanks everyone,
Duane

Thanks Vic and Ed

believe - Thanks and congrats. It's awesome of you to hold back and walk with your friend's.

Debra - I was hoping to meet some Wishers at this years race, but I'd run this race again for the Mini-meets. :cool1:

Morgan - Thanks. I hope to check out the taste of Cincy and I hope to do Cleveland next year.

To my Buzz's Brigade Teammate's Wendy - I would have loved to have stayed, but couldn't either. Do they recognize people for the half? Allie and Duane Thank you as well. Go Wish Team and Go Buzz's Brigade. :)

I need to look at the Mrs. photos to see if she got any worth posting.

Chris, congratulations on your first half!! You should be really proud of yourself - I know I walked around like a proud peacock after my first half!! Your time is fabulous too. Thanks for taking the time to write up the report.

Steve and Believe, congratulations to both of you too!

Becky

 CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR WISHERS WHO DID THE PIG!!!!

Chris Congratulations on your first 1/2 - what an amazing feeling!!!

GREAT RACE AND AWESOME REPORT, CHRIS...CONGRATULATIONS!

You make it sound so good and with no Minnie to run next year, I think I'd like to try another piggy...I did the little piggy (5K - my 2nd 5K ever) in 2007 and Dennyha did the Half. I didn't run across any bridges...that would be cool.

Keep up the great work and look forward to talking to you in January - maybe over dinner at Germany again!

M'Lisse (dennyha's DW)

M'lisse,

It's great to hear from you! Hope the Minnie went well for you! :thumbsup2

Make sure you thank Denny for me too. It was a great experience!

I still think it's crazy that I met a couple WISHers and had dinner with them and didn't even know it until later. :lmao:

Chris- Congratulations on your first half. Running across that finish line just feels amazing, doesn’t it? I had posed on the weekly board asking how the race was before reading this so you can ignore it. Hopefully no one got hurt in that fire.

Steve/Believe- Congrats to you also.

Debra- Good idea on making this a DIS meet. Just looking at everyone’s locations it looks like there are a lot of Mid-westerners and setting something up in this general area would be nice. Plus even though the Pig is a bigger race it isn’t as unmanageably huge like Chicago.

M'lisse,

It's great to hear from you! Hope the Minnie went well for you! :thumbsup2

Chris, Congratulations on your first 1/2M. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

It's funny how these things snowball. It was about 2 years ago that Carrie talked me into running the WDW 1/2M. Now my whole family has been pulled in. We run into you and your family while dining at Biergarten, and now you've done the pig. Sounds like a pyramid scheme, huh?

Anyway, Good Job!
