Hi Everyone
My sister and I just spent two nights in Orlando for the Global Pet Expo at the Convention Center. We decided to try out Coronado Springs since we had never stayed there and the price was right.
I've stayed at all of the moderates and my first thought at finding my room was that this place was freaking huge.
Maybe it was that all the buildings looked alike to me, I was having to find our room the entire time by locating the water features closest by.
That said, I thought the rooms were very nice and they did have the upgraded toiletries. I stayed at POFQ the week before and they still had the cheap stuff.
We were in Casita 3, room 3170, first floor with a view of bushes. (Not that we ever opened the curtains.) We were super close to the gym and spa but working out isn't really my cup of tea on vacation.
We walked through though and it was really nice. Two thumbs up, even if I didn't use it.
We did run into a problem and I TRY to judge a business by the way it handles a problem and not necessarily the problem itself. At almost 10 pm the first night Sandi went to climb into bed and found it full of hair, sand and other weird things. After freaking and running around the room wiping herself off with antibacterial wipes I called housekeeping. Someone was there within 15 minutes to strip and remake the bed. Plus the woman who came was really great, friendly and nice. So therefore I'm giving the resort a thumbs up on response. It shouldn't have happened in the first place, but life happens and they fixed it. Moving on.
I thought the resort itself was very pretty, but was glad I wasn't stuck in a Casita far away. A few pics on the walk to El Centro...
It made us kind of sad one night, there was a cat down by the water. We tried to catch him but he was having none of it. Wonder if someone dumped him there.
We tried Rix Cafe, the Maya Grill and the Pepper Market while we were there.
The Rix Cafe had a good selection I thought, loads of pastries. (not sure if that's a good thing or not!!) My only complaint is that the coffee creamer is on the opposite side of cafe than the coffee. Couldn't figure that out but no biggie. No hot chocolate machines in case you're looking.
Both breakfast meals I had from here were pretty good, just standard fare. I think if the resort was packed it would be a nightmare in there, it's pretty small.
We had dinner at the Pepper Market and I was pretty impressed. Again, though I could see it being utter chaos during a busy time. In case you haven't been, the process is interesting, you have to wait to be seated then can go get food, they stamp your card when you select something then pay at the end. A 10% gratuity is automatically added on. We also visited the bar in there...they were very liberal with the alcohol in their drinks and a good time was had by all.
The last night we ate at the Maya Grill on a whim. We had a 30 minute wait time at 7:30 w/o ADR's (see bar comments above) and were seated next to the family from hell. Thankfully they were on desserts already so it didn't last too long.
We both had the specials, crusted Sea Bass w/ two veggies and it was SO good. ($29 each so pricey) We also had their bread w/ awesome dipping sauce which I got the recipe for. We did order the Seafood Skillet for an appetizer, it was $13 and included....3 clams and 1 mussel. The perk was that it came in some great sauce which we ate 8 pounds of bread with.
Not worth $13 though. Service was great until about 3/4 of the way through then he was MIA. Overall a good experience, but it was about $120 with tax (and two drinks) and not sure if I'd pay that again. I'd definitely do it on the dining plan though. Oh, and the drinks were potent, I had a hurricance that did a number on me. Good deal.
We had great intentions of visiting Rix Lounge, it looked so cool and that second night it was hopping. I had no idea that it was even there and look forward to trying it out next time. Please see note above about potent hurricane and the fact that I'm old enough to know when I've been beaten.
Always seems like a good idea after drinks...
Anyway, now that I've rambled on and on and on...we really liked CSR and I'd like to take Larry for a long adult weekend there. I don't think the kids would absolutely love it, it's not too "Disney" and definitely has a more adult feel to it. (Oh, and nice gift shop too!)
It's defnitely worth a try if you're thinking about it!
