My wife and I shot over to Disney Springs last evening to check out the new Homecoming Kitchen for some starters and drinks. Again, this is not a full review, just our experience stopping in for a quick trip.

We sat at the bar which is really cool as it has a really nice wood top that changes from one tree type to another with huge corner pieces from massive trees at one point.

Looking over the menu, the prices again were a bit more than we expected even for Disney prices. Local crafts beers were going for $10 and up. That to me is just too much as other restaurants and bars in Disney Springs have the same beers for much less.

We had no intentions of eating a full meal, just for a few starters and drinks, just to check the new spot out.

We had the Church Lady Deviled Eggs ($10.00) These were very good and are prepared as traditional Deviled Eggs. Nothing over the top on anything here. Very good!

We also tried a bowl of the Addie Maes Chicken Dumpling Soup ($7.00) This was the best deal on the menu for the size of the dish to the amount of the dish. The bowl was a nice size and it is not a traditional chicken & dumpling soup. The "dumplings" are more like a long flat pasta than a dumpling. Still, very good as well. Sorry, forgot to post that picture before deleting from my phone.

We also tried their grits there as when we return I am looking forward to trying their Shrimp & Grits ($26.00). I did not like the fact they charged us $7.00 for a sample of their grits though. On the bill, they charged us for a side of Mashed Potatoes. The portion of Grits they brought out was in a bowl that could be best described as something a restaurant would bring out salad dressing in, not an actual "side".

The prices on entree are to be expected and on par with other Disney restaurants. Anywhere from around $21 to $46. However, their adult beverages are very high (to me). Just an example, our bill last evening was $106 for the following:

Deviled Eggs - $10.00
Chicken & Dumpling Soup - $7.00
"Side" of Grits - $7.00
4 Shots - $34.00
2 Glasses of Wine - $28.00
2 Beers - $20.00

Good news is they already accept both AP and TiW discounts! We'll be back soon to try some of their entrees for sure. Everything looked great as it came out around us!

Thanks for the review!

We'll be going for lunch on our trip in a few weeks so I'm interested in hearing reviews beforehand!

Thank you for your review. One of the item we want to order when we go in November is deviled egg. Both my son and I love deviled eggs and is looking forward to it. However, worry that it might be too much for 2 people since I want to order chicken and mac and cheese.

I'm hoping they will let us substitute mash potatoes with mac and cheese.

Also been reading their hush puppies are great so so many things I want to try but since only 2 of us, it might be too much food.

Please let us know how was the main entree when you go back.

The eggs do look good. I can't get over charging you that much for a "sample", especially grits! I could buy several canisters for that-lol. I'm glad I have a good recipe for shrimp & grits.

Good to know that the adult beverage prices are higher than average.

Like to share your recipe for shrimp and grits, pretty please? I had shrimp and grits for the first time in April at Flower and Garden kiosks and that was my best snack/food from the whole trip. I was so looking forward to having it again at Food & Wine this November but I don't see it on the list.

That was my favourite snack at this year's Flower & Garden as well. I probably got that near a dozen times. It was very good!

My only regret from my April trip was that I didn't get more! Originally we had planned 2 days at Epcot but swtiched to 2 days at MK instead. I could have used up all my extra CS credits on these!

Certainly!

It's pretty calorific, so I don't make it often. It just isn't as good without all of the dairy! I reduce the butter by half and I add about a cup of shredded cheese when it's done cooking, off the heat. I love the Wisconsin Grand Cru (like gruyere) and Kerrygold Irish cheddar is another tasty one. You want something very flavorful. Add half and taste. Add until you like it.
I often leave out the sausage or sub regular smoked sausage. I also leave out the green peppers and green onion garnish. A good BBQ rub can be used in place of Emeril's seasoning.
Since I'm shelling the shrimp myself, I do that ahead and make a quick shrimp stock to use in place of chicken stock. What's left I use for the grits and water for the balance. Shrimp stock takes it to a new level and is easy.

Shrimp stock
In a 4-6 qt saucepan add shrimp shells and a drizzle of olive oil over med-high heat. I put in some veggies like onion, celery, carrot - whatever typical stock veggies you might have. I keep a bag of scraps in the freezer and use the dark green leek leaves. Stir until shells are pink. For shells from 1 lb of shrimp, use 2.5 cups water and a small bay leaf. 1/2 cup dry white wine can be used in place of an equal amount of the water, if desired.
Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low simmer for 30 min. Turn off heat and let sit for 30 min to deepen flavor. Strain and use.

Probably more than you wanted to know!

Restaurants are heavy on grits and light on shrimp. I like heavy on shrimp and light on grits!

Woo! Sounds like these are the "slicker" style dumplings as opposed to the rolled/ball style! I've always wanted to try this but never got up the motivation to make them!

That's exactly what they are.

How were the grits? Depending on how they are cooked grits can either be the perfect consistency and delicious or they can be to stiff and not so great. Any idea if the grits are made with milk or water?

I've got a dinner reservation in September, the menu looks great so I'm excited to try it, thanks for your review!

I am so bummed by the pricing of Homecoming. I was really looking forward to this restaurant, as this is my type of fare. Everything on the menu looks right up my alley. Simple, good food.

But, $25 for Fried chicken and Doughnuts? I wouldn't mind at all spending that if it were a huge portion that could be shared. But 2 pieces? A lot of it has to do with cost of living....people on the coasts probably see $25 and think, meh. For me, I can get some of the best fried chicken in the world with sides for $10-$12. (which is still more than I would spend on a normal meal).

I guess if I am going to spend $25+ for a meal, I am doing a character meal. I am doing AYCE. I am doing a Large pizza at Via Napoli. I'm eating at bluezoo. I wouldn't spend $25+ for this food, I just wouldn't.

Sandwiches or dessert is a big maybe.

Looking at your pricing, I don't think the adult beverage prices are high. That is in the ballpark we pay in the suburbs of a New England city.

Same here. I really want to try those eggs, but my next visit will be either solo or just 2 people. I'm thinking of making a reservation at the end of my Disney Springs day, eating 1 or 2 with my meal, and taking the rest back to the room fridge. Breakfast!

When are you going? We are going in first week of November so if you go before me, pleases let us know how they were. Jasper Board also looks so good so now I don't know what I want! :)

Not going until January. I've seen some other reviews of the deviled eggs here and there (mostly positive, but not always).

We ate there last week. We both had the chicken sandwich. At $16, it was high for a sandwich but in line with prices around WDW. We had sodas, so I can't speak for the adult beverages, but the prices seem high, even for Disney. For the food, I had high hopes. The food came out quickly and was definitely fresh from the fryer. Steam came out literally from my first to last bite. But the chicken was dry. I got the spicy aioli that came with the sandwich on the side and am glad I did. It had a powerful flavor that would have overwhelmed the sandwich. I asked for BBQ sauce and didn't love that either, so the sandwich remained dry. The BBQ chips that came with it were a bit overdone so tasted bitter, but done properly, I think I would have enjoyed them. I feel like the fried chicken on the bone would have been better, but I didn't want something so heavy when it was so hot out. I think this is definitely a place to share an entree if we make another trip.
