We have people interesting in renting our old house and they have a Welsh Corgi. We are not thrilled with the idea of a pet there but if the breed isn't too bad, doesn't she a lot we might consider this because they seem like really responsible people. Anyone know anything about them? Are they barkers, do they like to dig, do I have to worry about the dog destroying our house?

I think it's the PEOPLE you need to worry about...by this I mean if they are responsible they have trained their dog properly or would not attempt renting a home with him. ANY dog can be ruin a house if not trained properly or cared for properly.

Well, I don't know much except around here they train them to be companion dogs for people autism, so I take that to mean they are fairly intelligent. I know they are small.

My dad's got a Corgi. Molly's not a barker or a digger, but I don't know any other Corgis to compare her to.

I agree it depends more on the dog's people than the breed. If the people seem to be the responsible type, they more than likely have a fairly well-behaved dog.

They are small and intelligent.

They are double coated so daily brushing and regular grooming will be required to minimize shedding.

They are known to be quite vocal (probably a herding trait more than anything else).

My suggestion is to try to contact someone at a Corgi rescue group or a breeder (there are a couple of breed groups) they will be better able to give you lots of input.

I would also agree that a lot depends on the owners...many "undesirable" traits go away with proper training and care.

Maybe you can set up a meeting with them and their dog. That would probably help you too!

The people have passed the test already, they want to rent it, we want to rent it to them the sticking point is the dog. Some dog breads tend to be diggers, etc. I just want info about the bread if anyone has the information. I think that people can be as blind with a pet as they are with kids and think the can do no wrong. I will meet the dog before we make the final decision.

Corgi's are herding dogs. They want lots of exercise and can bark, but usually for a reason. Obviously, some are exceptions, but most are usually not diggers. However, with a smart dog, if they are left alone for long periods of time, they can get bored and be destructive. Ask if they will crate the dog during the day. I also think it's reasonable to ask for a "pet deposit", a few hundred dollars to cover any damages the dog may incur.

We thought about that. We are asking 2 months rent for a deposit now, mainly because we have brand new real oak floors on the main floor and that would cover having them refinished. He said he would take the basement bedroom and the dog would be there because he didn't want the dog on the wood floors so that is good. There is carpet in the basement and the deposit would cover that but not the carpet AND the wood floors. We are thinking about putting a clause in the lease saying that if there is any damage above and beyond the deposit the renters would be responsible to pay that.

Yep. My old roommate and I rescued one from the pound and she couldn't be left alone. She ripped up a 2x2 foot area of carpet in the living room. Just shredded it. She ate any and all wires that were left out. She was pretty destructive - and we didn't have to leave for long periods of time. I'd be gone a half an hour and come back to a new chunk of carpet missing.

I didn't know if the breed or because of her being a shelter dog. Seems it may be a breed thing so OP you may want to make sure she's crated, as said or locked in a room without carpeting, wires, or anything that could be chewed up.
