Quick Service Meal

My husband and I are heading down in July and are debating on whether or not to get the quick service meal plan. We will probably eat breakfast and lunch at the food court at POR so I'm curious as to what constitutes a quick service meal. Does it have to be something like a burger and fries or can it be a bagel and chips?

If you are planning to have a meal consisting of a bagel and chips, don't get the QS meal plan. It'll be more cost effective to pay out of pocket.

A quick service meal is an entree, drink and dessert (no dessert at breakfast). Since the dining plan gives you only two meal credits per night, if you want to eat three meals a day, you'd have to pay for some meals out of pocket, and if a bagel and chips is what you would want for a meal, that would be one to pay out of pocket, especially since the only way it would be covered by the dining plan is by using two snack credits.

So you won't go to the parks until after lunch?

We have never used the meal plan, mostly because while we do enjoy an occasional dessert, we don't like it WITH a meal. Too much food at one time.

And there are days we'd like to just snack around instead of having lunch, or something like that.

It is really hard to make the QSDP worth it. If you try really hard by buying the most expensive item (whether or not you want it) and sharing meals, then you can come close to breaking even. You have to be careful with using the snack credits, but don't hoard them because you don't want a ton left at the end. I have heard people say that it is too much dessert (because that comes with lunch and dinner, but not breakfast). You can substitute (like get a water or cookie or fruit for dessert, depending on the cast member), but often those items are less than dessert would have been, so then you are behind. The refillable mug is great if your room is close to that area of your resort, but frustrating if it isn't. I did the ridiculous thing of pricing out all of our meals and seeing how much that would add up to compared to the cost of the plan. According to that estimate, we would have wasted $20 by buying the plan.
I'm one of those people that can't relax on vacation because I can't stop myself from thinking "$4 for a Mickey bar! No way!". Having them be "credits" instead of cash somehow makes it more palatable to me and makes me less likely to say no to the kids and snacks in the parks. This is the all-inclusive feel people talk about.
You really need to sit down and think about what kind of eaters you are, how much you plan to eat, where, and make a guess about how the plan would work for you. OR, just try it out and see what you think. As long as you use all your credits, you shouldn't be out too much money, but you'll be unlikely to be ahead. It's really not a way to save money.

We are the people that always get the dining plan. This way we don't have to worry about a meal budget. We know it's covered. There are many choices of foods from a lobster roll and chips to a burger and fries. If you don't want to pay out of pocket for breakfast, a snack credit gets a bagel and your refillable mug can be used for coffee, tea, cocoa. Or you can use the snack credit for anything at one of the various Starbucks that are now on property.its always more than enough for us. Enjoy your vacation.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I've been to WDW so many times and have never done a dining plan, so I had no idea what exactly to expect! I think we will be passing on it since it will likely be a huge waste of money for us.

.

We go to the parks at RD every day and then come back for a midday break and have lunch then. It's very rare for us to stay at the park all day and not head back around noon.

The dining plans are not worth the cost for us, but we aren't big eaters. Desserts at most QS are pretty gross to us, so it seems like a waste. We used QS Dining and regular Dining plans in the past. With the regular one with one Table Service Meal, one Quick Service and 1 snack we used the snack for breakfast for a muffin or some such. It was a LOT of food and we were stuffed every day. It was too much. The Quick Service plan wasn't a good value for us because we could hardly ever get the gross dessert substituted with something we would enjoy. Also eating 2 QS meals left us feeling like we were eating drive through quality food the entire vacation.

There are tons of great options with the QS plan if you do some research for the best deals including Be Our Guest for lunch or breakfast.

We have always stayed at the campground and had breakfast there and ate quick service for lunch and back to the site for most dinners. For 7 of us the meal plan just seemed like too much. But our next trip we are doing the plan with one QS and one TS mostly because my daughter wants a few character sit down meals and then one or two nice non-character meals. Neither of us are big eaters and I know we could probably eat for less but I just don't want to have to worry about it. Since we are driving I am planning on bringing a few breakfast type foods with us for when we want to eat in the room. I am wondering if we'll just have too much food. Also since we may not want our dessert at the time is it a faux pas to bring or ask for take out containers for them? You know as long as they aren't perishable.

Unless you plan on getting the most expensive quick service meal you can find, twice a day, plus dessert, then it's not worth it. I find it way better to just buy what I want, when I want it, and it still comes out cheaper than if I had gotten the dining plan.

I found about 75% of the time there's a dessert choice that is go for "to-go". I usually didn't want dessert right with my meal, but would like something sweet a bit later. So I took mine with me whenever possible. In the past I have taken cookies (sometimes these are wrapped and sometimes not, but I usually had an empty plastic baggie with me so wasn't an issue), the sugar free brownies come individually wrapped, some places will let you get the kids meal sides like bagged sliced apples as a dessert which are a nice healthy change, etc. I never hesitate to ask the CM which dessert might be portable. :) I've even had a place or two put a note on my receipt and I could come back later for dessert.

Also with the Dining Plan certain Table Service restaurants give you a smaller menu to select from rather than being able to chose anything from the menu. For example, Les Chefs. On Dining Plan we got a "pre-fixe" menu to chose from that I'm almost certain had only 3 or 4 choices on it.

I don't know if it's still the same, I'm sure somewhere on the Dining boards this is answered.

The prix-fixed menu at Les Chefs de France - and anywhere else that offers one - is part of the entire menu, not separate from. The prix-fixe advantage is that Dining Plan users get three courses. There are very, very, very few restrictions on what can be ordered, and no separate menus.

You were apparently misinformed. The Prixe Fixe is one choice from the entire menu. You were not limited to that.
DDP does not limit menu choice to plan participants

They gave us a special menu and said we had to use it because we were on the Dining Plan, but that was several years ago. Sounds like that has changed (or we were mislead by our server).

We ahve never done the Quick Service plan because it just seems like the Table Service dining plan is a better value. Of course, we have always liked the sit down meals as a means to take a break from the parks and relax.

It may just be my opinion, but I don't see how the QSDP is worth it ever if you are using a meal on Breakfast. Much better to go out of pocket in the morning. That being said, at early (11:00ish), big lunch using the QS plan will keep you full for a bit. Some of the portions at places like BOG and Columbia Harbour House can be pretty big. Keeping Breakfast light (say, a bagel and some fruit out of pocket) will make you more likely to finish all you are eligible to get with the QSDP, thus making it more cost effective. This of course assumes you are willing to go QS for dinner too and basically forgo any table service meals on your trip. If that is also a non-starter, the QSDP simply isn't worth it.

While we eat exclusively at QS places while at Disney we would never bother with a dining plan because its just not worth it for us.we bring our own drinks and breakfast foods (muffins pop tarts and fruit) and some snacky stuff for plane parks and hotel room (pretzels chips candy), and we find that kids meals or just a hot dog without fries/chipsor a slice of pizza is enough to fill us up. So not counting the $100 we spend at a grocery store we probably spend about $40/day on food which includes the daily churro beer or ice creams in the parks.
