I have made a few shirts for my kids, but they have only been on white t-shirts. I am going on a cruise with a group of friends and we want to make matching fun shirts. They will be red. Do I need to use dark transfer paper or will light ones do? Also, I do not have a boarder or background, only words~ i'm on a boat! Does anyone have ideas on how to make this look nicer. Thanks for your help and advice.

Dark transfers will show white wherever there is no design/color. So if you do not want a white background you will need to cut around/out your design
Or add a color background and border to make the design easier to cut around/out.

If you go with dark transfers

Yes, you need dark transfers, but just a word of caution - I have found with red shirts that if you iron too long, the red can come through the transfer. Just keep a close eye in it as you iron.

Ok, I only have words and I would prefer to only see the letters, kinda like screen print. I don't want to waster the ink by doing a colored background. And I'm not going to cut our each letter:) So should I use the light color transfer paper? Will it show up kinda clear around the letters? Thanks for the info about the iron, I will make sure to watch it.

I can understand your concern because I have stressed about the same thing. I typically put a box around my letters and use dark transfer paper. My friend is currently making shirts for her first trip and so I've saved a few threads to show her how the finished shirts turned out...

Here is a link that shows someone's awesome shirts. Notice that on the blue shirts she used dark transfer paper and cut a cool pattern around the Mickey and the words. On the orange shirts she used light transfer paper.

This is another example of dark transfer paper cut into a cool design - I love these shirts!

Hope all this helps! And again, none of those are my shirts or pictures, but I thought they might help you.

Thank you so much for sharing those links. It does give me a better idea on what it will look like.
