We are considering joining DVC and we are thinking about how we would use points, etc. Weighing all of the normal issues people weight when making this decision. If we bought in we would like to vacation most likely every 2 years, so I know the wisest decision is to buy 1/2 of the points we would want to use every two years. Here is my question.....

One of the things we would really like to do if we did this is take the extended fam (11 ppl) on a trip.

Let's say I buy 173 points. And lets just say we would want to go on the trip in Sept 2012.

Could I bank 2011, use 2012, and borrow 2013 for a total of 519 which would get us a week's stay at AKL grand villa? Can you both bank and borrow for the same trip?

Absolutely! Just be mindful of your banking window with your useyear.

I would be careful buying an exact amount for a certain room. DVC can redistribute the points chart (as they did for 2010), I would buy extra as a little cushion.

Thanks for the tip! I was just being hypothetic trying to figure out if you could both bank and borrow :)

I did know that the point chart changes, but I guess I was under the faulty understanding that when you buy in you lock in the point chart? If the point chart can change how do you make sure that you will have enough points for the future. I guess I don't understand...the point of joining would be to lock in a resort price I thought. Can anyone explain this further?

The total number of points for the resort, given all times, types of rooms, etc. can not change. If something goes up, then something will go down (ie: 2010 weekdays went up in most cases while weekends went down)..

The best way to plan for this, IMO, is to give yourself a cushion of 20 - 40 points. From what I understand, the 2010 change was only the 2nd time in DVC history that it did so I don't think it is something that will happen every single year.

Good luck!!

Good luck!

Thanks so much! This is all so daunting LOL

And remember, if you start of small, with the intent of going every 3 years, and find that it is just not enough, you can ALWAYS add on more points!!! It took me only a week to add on at BLT after buying a small VWL contract. The plan was to wait 6 months, but the excitement of being a DVC member was just too much that I knew I needed more!!!

Happy planning!!

The only problem with buying extra as a little cushion and going every other year is that you may end up losing some points. I go every other year, which means that I need to use up ALL of my current year's points because if I bank them I would have to use them the next year. Here's where the problem lies. I don't go the next year. I prefer to borrow a few points than to bank several. That way I can guarantee that I'm not losing any. Of course, doing this will catch up to you. Eventually, you will have to stay one night less or in a smaller villa, but that's way down the road if you borrow only a few.
