quick ? about school

I honestly think they don't expect most of the kids to be there. They will force the staff to be there, classrooms will be mostly empty, but the state will be satisfied that they had the makeup day.

I would send my kids if I could, but if I had unchangeable plans already in place those would probably take priority.

That wouldn't fly around here. My niece's school district has several Saturdays built into the school calendar this year due to needing to get out of school early to complete a building renovation. However, if 80% or more students do not show up, the day will not count as a school day.

That said, they do not have only 2 days notice for Saturday school. I think that would be really difficult to work around. I would not be very happy with that short of notice. The district should have planned it for further out in the school year so people could plan.

that's what I'm sayn' ...I don't understand the 2 day notice???

OP, In this kind of case I would hope they would be a little understanding since this isn't a normal thing. Since they only gave two day notice. They are going to have to understand people can't just drop there plans.

that is what I think as well..sil said that she tried to talk to them about it they said they would be unexcused. I just don;t get it..:confused3

I just got an idea...whoever at the school came up with this brilliant idea should have to call Grandma and explain to her why none of the kids will be at her party. I can tell you that MY Grandma (who will be 90 in July) would give them a good talking to about family values, prorities, and "that's what's wrong with this world today." Those kids would be excused REALLY quick!!!

LOL I love it!!! :lmao::lmao:

Yesterday on one of our popular radio stations all day people were calling in and voicing how mad they are about this..I didn't know b/c I didn't listen to it but dh did while he was at work and told me about it..apparently the discussion got very heated....

See I can handle spring break and summer, I understand that if we go over snow days they will have to be made up with a reasonable notice...but do give a 2 day notice for a sat???? this just blows my mind..

they reason they don't take away days from spring break is because they know that many people already have vacation plans for that week. also, do your days have to be made up by a certain date? Our school year cannot go past June 30th.

Still doesn't explain why only 2 days notice for the Saturday makeup. A couple of weeks notice would have been better. Maybe they figure it doesn't really matter what Saturday they choose, as there will always be a certain percentage of families who already have plans for that day, so they are just getting it over with? :confused3

I wouldn't be worried at all about the unexcused absence part. While it may be marked as unexcused, I doubt anything negative will come of it.

ETA: In some schools, they add minutes onto the remaining days in the school year to make up time. I'm guessing that isn't allowed where you are.

I don't know how it is in other places, but I believe in Maine a certain percentage of students has to attend a make-up day for it to count. In 2005 (?) we did two Saturday make-up days due to snow. It was horrible. Teachers who had plans had to take personal time to get the day off! (at the time we got 3 personal leave days) We had 2 weeks notice for the first day, a month for the second (2 weeks later). The other "option" was to take time from April vacation but many students and staff in our district had vacation plans, so they chose to do Saturdays instead.

I know ..I don;t know if they have to be made up by a certain date but I do know they took 1/2 of spring break already..so they gave a notice before they told everyone about the sat. about the spring break but couldn't do the same for sat????
