Questions on making a ressie at a nonhome resort.

I have a question for you DVC Gurus. I made a reservation for January of 2002 at my home resort, BWV. I was thinking of trying the VWL. I would want to check out of the VWL on January 30, 2002. Is my day to call on June 30, 2001?

I am also wondering how it works if you already have a reservation? If it is available, I assume you can change it right then. If it is not, do you go on a waitlist and cancel your original reservation only if and when they call you?
