Hi - While I have been going to WDW for many years and currently planning a wedding there next ****, I am entirely new to DVC! On our usual trips, we use hotels merely for the purposes of sleeping and showering, but for our honeymoon, I'd actually like to stay at deluxe resort, enjoy the accomodations and take advantage of all that the resorts have to offer.

Thus, I'm making the dive into understanding DVC. I've been reading the DVC board stickies and some other informational sources and ebooks on DVC, and I think I am getting the gist of it.

We are leaning toward renting right now since we don't want to use tons of cash to invest in buying DVC (especially with the wedding in a few months!). I think understand the pros and cons of renting vs buying.

One thing I don't understand about renting and the offers posted on the rent/trade board is this...do I need to look for someone who is offering to rent the exact amount of points I would need for the accomodations I'm seeking? :confused3

For example, a week at **** view for our dates requires 169 points. I see folks renting 140, 70, 270, etc. I'm not sure who to contact?

As a non-member, I assume I cannot combine points because the member needs to make a reservation and they cannot make a reservation for less points than they are offering...right?

I also am not sure if someone selling 270 points would be interested in renting me only 169 of their points? Would they?

I'm sorry if these are dumb questions, and I hope that I have posted in the right place. Can someone please help me understand how to plan my dream honeymoon?! :bride:

Many thanks! :flower3:

An owner can rent to multiple people. You can also rent from multiple owners, but each owner would have to reserve a few days of your stay then link the reservations.

If I were you, and being a first time renter, I would look for someone that has 169 or more points to rent, and not try to rent from multiple owners. It is rare, if not impossible, to find an owner with the "exact" number of points any renter may need...most renter do look for a single owner that has more than enough points to accommodate them.

One thing to also remember is that DVC owners book their reservations far in advance and availability becomes limited the sooner you get to travel dates.

Since you are hoping for a **** view room, I would consider looking for someone now to try and secure this for you. Although we are still 6 months away, for DVC, that is really a short time frame.

Matter of fact, depending on when in **** you want to travel, this reservation may be difficult even at this late in the game.

Good luck!

technically, you are not renting pts, you are renting a reservation. so you can rent a reservation from one owner for 5 nights that takes 120 pts and another reservation for 2 nights that takes 49 pts...but you would not be able to rent 1 and a half nights worth of pts from one owner and 5 and a half nights worth of pts from another.

they can make a reservation for fewer pts than they are offering...but at some pt you are right that an owner with 190 pts to rent may not want to rent only 169 pts since the leftover 21 is hard to make a reservation with.

at that point, i would think you'd have a great shot. JMO.

i'd also agree that time is getting short. hope it works out.

To clarify, the reason we do not allow such specifics is because then the post could be considered a solicitation for a rental. Those types of posts are only allowed as replies to Points for Rent threads on the DVC Rent/Trade board. :)

Generic rental questions are welcome.

Thanks, I had intedend for it to be a general question to understand what kind of renter I needed to look for, but I can see now how it could be misconstruyed. Of course, I didnt realize that at the time of the post....sorry <insert newbie embarrassed face!>

Thanks again mods and those who replied!

Points can be used at all Disney Resorts and the renter can be very flexible. No minimum number of points are required to be rented.

Kind of misleading info. Home resort points can be used 11 months out. Any points can be used at 7 months out. However, sometimes at 7 months out, what the non-member wants isn't available any longer.

The owner might not be flexible at all - no cancelations, no changes, full payment to once the reservation is made, etc. It depends on the owner who is renting the reservation.

Also try the Rent/Trade board sponsor - David's Rentals. David can take care of consolidating all the points you need from different owners and linking the reservations if needed.

He does an excellent job and takes all the hassle and worry out of renting - from the viewpoint of a renter and a Member.

Read over the link to his site and the FAQ's - he also has a thread over there on that board that he monitors and answers all questions, or will email or call you if you submit questions at his site.

I've rented points out on his site before, and am very happy with his service.

I have posted points for rent in the past. The last time posted what I had a available and actually ended up renting to three different parties. Just reply to what you are interested in booking and have them check availability. It's as easy as that!!
