Questions about points and cash reservations

We have decided to become DVC members and are currently on a waitlist to purchase 200 points. 200 points is plenty if we plan on staying in a studio but we are short points to stay an entire week in a one bedroom because the weekend points are a lot more.

My questions are:

Is it easy to get a cash reservation and are you allowed to stay in the same room? If so- are there any discounts for the cash ressie?

My other thought is to move to a studio.

How do most people do this if they do not want to use their points for the Fri-Sat night stay?

Thanks for any suggestions!

We come from a distance so we always stay the weekend on points. Sometimes we spend one of our two weekends at Universal. Next year we will be doing that.

You can combine a cash reservation with a point resewrvation through MS. If available, you can get a 25% discount on the room and the reservations will be linked. Whether a cash room is availabel may depend on what time of year you plan to go. We go during very busy school vacation times when it's impossible to get a cash room.

Some people move to a Value or Moderate Resort for a weekend as well. Disney will move your luggage for you if you choose to do that.

there are many threads about what people do to stretch out their points. Some only stay Sun - Thur nights others pay cash ,others switch resorts and many other ideas .

Theres no limit , well except its late and I can't think of anything else <G>

I'm a firm believer in owning enough points so as not to have to "stretch" them by using still more out of pocket costs. The whole reason DVC or any other timeshare, is to lock in a pre-paid vacation. If I am going to continue to pay rack rate or rack rate -25% when available, I would assume I didn't have enough points. That was why we ended up adding on almost another whole contract just a year after our original purchase. It is always my advice to do your homework ahead of time and know the number of points you will likely need for now and the future. Unfortunately, while we thought we had planned well getting 230 to begin with, after our first ressie, we learned that was not the case, and we added on an additional 150. Now we seem to have the perfect number of points for us, because we manage to get by with very little banking and borrowing.

For MS cash reservations in the same unit type that are linked, you should be able to stay in the same room. For cash rooms through CRO you can ask to stay in the same rooms. In some cases you can't get cash rooms for certain room types like BW view or standard view at BWV, if you have one of these situations you will almost certainly have to move. Also for a linked cash reservation through MS you should only have to check in once (though there have been exceptions), for CRO plus points you will generally have to check in twice even if you don't have to change rooms.
