I have a question regarding online check-in. If you check-in using this service does this squash any chances of getting some pixie dust for an upgraded room when you get to the resort?
YEs, you can request it. But, if it is not met and you did online check in you "should be" out of luck. Online check in is for those people that are going to accept the given room in order to keep the line moving quickly. If you anticipate needing to make any changes you should not do online check in.
We just returned from a trip to Boardwalk Inn, and we completed the online checkin a day prior to arrival. We'd booked a standard water view room with three adults. The only request I made was the Boardwalk view on the computer checkin process, which I was a little nervous might affect the paid-for water view.
We were seriously upgraded, much to our surprise ... club level deluxe suite.
The pixie dust does exist even with the online checkin! Good luck
You cannot make a request from the online check-in page. In fact, you can't make a request online at all. You have to call and have your request added to your reservation.
The only thing online check-in has to do with your room assignment is that you are assigned to a room that will likely be ready when you arrive - no matter your request.

True, but people can and do change rooms all the time at online check-in. It is a hassle and rude to the other people in line, but there's no warnings on the online check-in page that what you get is what you get. I did online check-in and got the exact opposite of what I was hoping for so I politely asked to be changed and was obliged. Though I hated doing it, it was not a big deal.
Well, we booked and paid for a woods view at WL last summer, but had some pixie dust at check in, and were upgraded to a courtyard view. I did do online check in. I'm not sure it matters.
Thanks for all of the replys. We booked a garden room at the contemporary and was hoping that maybe we could get a little pixie dust on check in day. If not, I am just happy to be at Disney!
As of last Dec (my last WDW stay), pretty much the only things you could request when doing online checkin were things like..close to the elevator, or bus stops, need a crib. Actual area requests were not offered. I have yet to see anything about requesting a certain floor, room view type, etc.
But, that may be different for 'regular' cash rooms vs DVC villas.

When I checked into POP last week, it gave the choice of each section (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, close to transport, elevator, etc). When I checked into CSR, the choices were (Cabanas, Casitas, Ranchos, etc.)
For pop I had not called in requests, and was able to select 70s. For CSR, I had called. I tried to check cabanas and I got an error message. Many people who have called in requests are getting the same error message.

What you have shown above is all you can request on online check-in. Many people (most people?) have very specific requests - a specific building, high floor, specific room numbers, corner room, etc. Many of these requests are not an option. When we did online check-in at POR, you could not select a specific area so that may only be an option for some resorts. There is no place at online check-in to type requests in your own words which some people need because the options they give do not represent what they are requesting. These people need to call and add their request to their reservation, as I said above.
