Is anyone internet/tech savy?

I have been having a lot of issues with my internet. For months now. I only have 2 choices of who my ISP is. The first was even worse, so they are not an option anymore.

First they gave us a new modem. And they have had me refresh the ISP many times, pinging, gave me new ISP, etc. Yesterday they changed my ISP address to a 'static' one :confused3 Then we also bought a new router, thinking that was it. I have another computer running off that router plus a PS3 and a Tivo wireless.
My internet went out again last night. It came back on this AM but the router detected no internet again for a brief period.

Could those wireless devices as in the PS3 or Tivo be causing an issue at all? And I don't understand about the IP address, they never gave me a static address before?

TIA

While there are many smart, tech-savvy people on the DIS and someone here may be able to help, I would suggest that you go over to Broadband Reports and post your question on the appropriate board there. It's a site like the DIS, with forums, news, information and test tools, but focused on just the kinds of issues you are having.

Good luck!

okay this is going to sound VERY basic-but have the checked the cabling from the access point or box into your house? The reason im asking-i moved last spring-when the tech came to hook the stuff up he spent like two hours monkeying around with my modem-which i knew was good-and the connections in the box coming to my appartment because he couldnt get a good metered signal-let along connect to the internet-about two hours into this i stepped out on my balcony-and discovered the problem. the previous tenants had done a "self splice" to allow a cable to run down to a bed room where there is no out let. It was a badly done job and there was about three inches of unsheilded-and wet at the time-wire. He replaced the splice and it took care of the issues.
There are also a number of issues that can be occuring in the service providers infrastructure that are wayyy to technical for me to explain-but usually its a simple thing-like bad wire-that gets overlooked.
