Questions about AFTER you cheat...

I've been faithfully following the South Beach Diet for a little over a month now, eating only allowed carbs, etc. Well, for the first time I had a "planned cheat" this past Sunday night at a get together at my in-laws. I ate 1 roll and then a small portion of about 3 different desserts (peach pie, apple crisp & ice cream)! Well, all day yesterday I felt terribly bloated and so tired. I also think I set off a trigger reaction because I ended up drinking 2 margaritas last night because they sounded so good! But I really paid for it since I slept terribly all night (tossed & turned, kept waking up) and I think it must have been because of all the sugar in the margarita and my body is not used to it. Then, I just had to step on the scale this morning and I'm up 2 lbs.!

Anyway, my question is this - Is the bloating, restlessness because of the carbs? And, do you think my scale is just showing water retention (hopefully)? Do any of you experience "cravings" after a cheat like that?

I know there aren't many SB dieters here, but maybe those on Atkins could also help?

Thanks!!

This sounds like the aftermath of one of my cheats! :D The tiredness, bloating and craving sugar are my classic symptoms!

The extra pounds are very probably water weight. Just get back on plan and they'll fall off in a day or two. Fight those sugar cravings!! You'll be back on track in no time!

Eating refined carbohydrates makes you crave more of them.

Hop back on induction and you will drop that fluid and get rid of your cravings.

A tip about drinking margaritas: if you want a margarita have a real one. They are made using tequila, triple sec and lime juice only. The mix they use to make margaritas in bars is usually mostly sugar and not good.

Get back on induction for a few days and you will feel better and get back on track again.

Thanks Doreen & Katholyn!!
:D

I'm going to really watch what I eat over the next couple of days & down the water until those 2 nasty lbs. are gone. Thankfully, I think I have definitely learned my lesson about cheating & won't be doing that any time soon!

Thanks again, buddies!

Hi,

I understand the cravings.

If I eat some forbidden sweet I can't stop at one. Not only do I cheat at that point it follows me for the rest of the day.

I started the SBD back in August and did cheat some after
phase 1.

I lost 12 pounds in phase 1. I gained a little back and got right back on track.

I have now loss a total of 13 pounds. I'm not strict enough on
some days and will eat too many nuts, however, I only eat things
on the list I can have. I think that's why I have been able to maintain and at least not gain.

I did purchase that Carb Smart ice cream from Breyers.and after receiving a post from W.I.S.H. with the first 3 ingredients I will not buy that again.

I have not offically signed up for the W.I.S.H. Challenge, I will
in the very near future.

Good Luck!

ADisneyMom - thanks for posting your experience too. 13 lbs. lost is so great! I started the SBD at the end of August and I've lost 6 lbs. so far (well, 4 if these last 2 don't disappear soon!) so it's taking me a while. However, I'm not discouraged since I really like this diet. In fact, I don't even know why I cheated - I have found ways to enjoy pretty much everything that sounds good through some creative cooking and the help of the many recipes I've found online. I hope you have much success "on the beach"!

:D

Disneymom, I'm glad you said what you did about the cravings I was feeling like I'm the only one who can't get enough once I start. I posted a few days ago about eating 3 Atkins bars one day. The no carb candy bumped me out of ketosis and then once I got a taste of chocolate, well then there was no turning back. 3 bars later, I was not happy. When you are having too many carbs' the sugar cravings are horrid!! I've been being really strict the last 2 days and today, I feel alot better but I'm still feeling hungrier then I know I normally would.
Cheating really throws everything off!:(

This is going to be an unpopular post and is in no way meant to make you feel bad. What Kath said about the Margs is right. I also bloat from them, and so does everyone else I have talked to about this. Did you have them with salt? I never do, and they still bloat me. (I stopped ordering them with salt after I ran my fingers around the rim and say how much salt actually fits on that rim!)

Also, (here's the not nice part) did you have them because they really sounded good, or because deep down inside, you were feeling guilty about having already cheated and figured you may as well? I only ask this because it took me an entire summer and 15 pounds to work out my margarita issues. After much introspection, I realized I was angry at myself for giving in to temptation and at that point I may as well really top it off. "Oh, I can get back on track", said I. (Not to mention the fact that after 2 margs, I stopped feeling so bad. :p )

Pay attention to what your body is telling you sweetie! You are probably just retaining some water and will lose it quickly enough. Get back on track and be good to yourself!

Keep the Faith!

Tracy, you made a lot of good points and don't worry, you didn't make me feel bad in the least! I appreciate your thoughts. A little self-examination never hurts and I think you are probably right about why I drank the margaritas. Yes, they sounded good but I probably did also reason that I had already cheated and it wouldn't make too much more of a difference to cheat again!

Unfortunately, I'm still paying for my flawed reasoning since I'm not only up those 2 lbs. but another 1 joined in yesterday! When I think about those lbs. logically (which isn't always the case), I know that I didn't really gain 3 lbs. over the course of 3 days, that it has to be water weight since I didn't go off plan that badly. However, it's still frustrating to see the scale going up instead of down. But on the bright side, maybe that nasty scale will help me to avoid this happening again!

Thanks again, Tracy!:D

Hey Nic!
Guess where I went for dinner last night? Yup! It's true. We went to the "crack house"! (It's a great Mexican place with killer Margs. We call it the crack house because once we're there, it's all over! :worried: ) I thought I was being good. I only had a tostada w/o cheese, and 2 small margs. (the first was a doozie, the second was the swill at the bottom of the pitcher. BLECH!) I also took it easy on the chips and salsa. And the result of this? 2 pounds! I'm ok with it though. I do know its just water and with TOM approaching, I'm getting a double whammy. Anyway, wanted to share that with you. I'm trying to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing. :p (heres funny: the food bill came to $12. The total bill came to $34! I think that is the way Mexican restaurants should be! )

Keep the Faith!
Tracy

LOL, Tracy!! You sound like me - sacrifice some of the food calories so I can bring on the drinks!

I'm glad you're not worrying about those 2 lbs. - they'll be gone soon, I'm sure! One of mine decided to leave me this morning so hopefully by the end of the weekend I'll be back on track!

Thanks for sharing your story - I don't feel like such a lush now!
;)

Thanks nicolep91,

Good Luck to you on SBD. I look forward to your posts.
