question- renting

It is looking like we won't be able to go on vacation this year- DH got a big cut in wages and other benefits today at work. My question is this: we currently have a reservation for *. Can we rent this stay out? If so, how would we go about this?

Sorry to hear you have to give up your trip. The DVC Rent/Trade board allows existing reservations to be offered starting 30 days from check-in, at the point where cancelling a reservation would cause the points to go into Holding. In the meantime you could try offering the points for rent (the points that are currently assigned to this reservation) and if you are successful in doing so, cancel your existing reservation and use the points to make a new reservation for someone else. If you don't manage to rent the points then you can post the existing reservation starting 30 days from check in. There are also other places (ebay, TUG) which have no restrictions on offering existing reservations.

You would be offering to make a NEW reservation for someone else using your points at their preferred resort and for their travel dates. It would be a new reservation, not your existing reservation. If someone responds to your rental ad and there is availability for their dates, you would cancel your existing reservation and use the points to book the new reservation for your renter.

If you are not successful renting out your points, then once you are within 30 days of check in for your existing reservation, you could submit a "Reservation for Rent" thread, offering that reservation.

It's not always easy to rent an existing reservation. You have to find someone who wants to travel the same dates and stay at the resort and in the room type you have already booked. Unless you have an issue with points that are expiring soon or other restrictions on your points, it's often easier to rent those same points by booking something new on request rather than trying to rent an existing reservation because you are casting a wider net.
