Question regarding special diets...breakfast for dinner?

We are going to WDW January 21-28, staying at POR, and currently on the QSDP. We are thinking of upgrading to the DDP, in order to get the kids into some character meals.

My question is this...my DS has Asperger's Syndrome as well as anxiety. He is very rigid in his food choices, and other than McDonalds (), and some snacks, eats almost exclusively breakfast foods. Is it possible, if we make ADRs for dinner at restaurants that we know also serve breakfast, that they would be able to serve him, say, Pancakes and bacon for dinner? I'm looking to make my ADRs in case we do upgrade, and wanted to see if I should even bother.

I plan to bring stuff into the park for him for lunch, and breakfast is obviously not an issue...lol

TIA for any help!!!

If the restaurant has bacon cheeseburgers on the menu then serving an order of bacon would be simple enough since they'll have cooked bacon on hand anyway. If they don't have bacon cooked anyway then the likely won't have any that's not frozen solid to be able to prepare. Everything else might be tricky as well. I believe that restaurants put away breakfast foods to make space for lunch foods and then put away lunch foods to make space for dinner foods. If the breakfast mixes/ingredients are not easily accessible then I'm not sure if they'll be able to accomodate. You'll probably encounter mixed results with some places being able to do it and others saying they can't, depending on the setup of their kitchens.

I'd contact Special Diets and ask them about the specific set of restaurants where you want to eat. They'll get answers directly from the restaurants so you'll know one way or the other.

I would not expect breakfast for dinner (unless it is on the menu). The kitchen will be set up for dinner as that is what they will be serving. I know we have asked in the past (due to allergies our food choices are limited) for something from other menus at dinner and have been told it was not possible. You may find exceptions, but I would not expect it.

I sort of figured that might be the case, but I have read some wonderful stories here on the boards of Disney going above and beyond to accommodate people with special concerns regarding eating, thought it was worth asking! :)

Thanks for the responses. Any suggestions from anyone who has BTDT? Can we bring outside food into the restaurants for him to eat? Just trying to figure out what if anything might work?

They really do go well above and beyond but they have to work with what they have on hand. That's where your difficulty lies.

I believe that the rule about food is that you can bring food into the restaurant (at least Disney owned restaurants) but that they can not bring it to the kitchen for any reason meaning they can't heat it, transfer it to a plate or touch it in any way. This has come up on the board regarding allergy birthday cakes and this seems to have always been the consistent answer.

My recommendation is that if you want character meals then make them breakfasts. You'll have to pay full price for your son even if he doesn't eat so you might as well make it a great experience for everybody. It's not the best bang for your buck financially on the DDP but IMO it's more important to focus on the best experience and for you I'd say breakfast would be the best experience for TS meals all around. We eat most of our CS meals back at our resort which would also work out well for you since you could buy some premade packaged pancakes that you could just run through the toaster in the food court and maybe order a side of bacon (most food courts have bacon cheeseburgers so I would think you could order a side of bacon all day long) using a snack credit.

I book our TS meals very much around dining preferences and needs of our family. In our case that means making sure that menus have base ingredients to be able to make safe foods for my kids that they'll actually enjoy. In your case that would mean breakfast.

A long time ago (this galaxy however) - when my son was first dx'd with type 1 diabetes - then food allergies - he was also rather picky about what he would eat. Back then there wasn't the same set-up with a special diets department but we would call someone who handled special diets and she forwarded the info to all the chefs where we planned to eat. Many times we arranged to them (a TS place) to have food on hand not typically served there but easy to obtain (at the time - hotdogs for example).

My guess is that if the requests are simple enough that the chef could make those items - in a Disney owned place. Our allergies/needs are not so difficult to handle (common allergies) but I wonder if contacting special diets would help. I've certainly had chefs make more challenging things than pancakes that were not normally on the menu (sometimes an entire dinner and dessert).

Of course changing to TS character meals might also be a great option - lots of breakfast choices. The restaurant will let you bring in your own food for your child of course - they just cannot prepare it or handle it for you. But if you brought in a sandwich or whatever, they aren't going to refuse to let him eat it. If he eats off the buffet or orders from the menu then you'd have to use some of your credits or pay OOP.

I hope you find some places that can work with you. I think my task of finding hot dogs was a bit easier!:)

Contact Special Diets and explain the situation. TS that serve breakfast and dinner may be willing to work something out with you. The breakfast chef could put aside some pancake batter and bacon to be prepared later at dinner. Check out menus and have a list of possible restaurants when you contact Special Diets so they can either find out for you or get you in touch with the individual chefs. Good luck. :flower3:

Thanks e eryone for your replies. I will definitely call special diets and see what they say.

Today I made a couple of ADRs for breakfast buffets...as I know those will work well for him! I'd love to use some TS credits if we do upgrade for dinners, but will be happy having the kids enjoy character breakfasts if that's what works best.

I have food issues and in fact have asked at many restaurants if I could get a simple breakfast for dinner and some times they could and sometimes they couldn't. I have had some do it one time and not the next time. I think it's a combination of who's cooking how busy they are and what they have on hand.
