Question regarding presidential funerals

Does every past president receive the same treatment when they pass away as President Reagan is receiving?

I don't recall President Nixon having such an outpouring for his funeral and I certainly don't remember the stock market and the mail service shutting down for the day. I understand President Nixon had problems during his shortened term but still, he was the President of the United States.

Don't get me wrong, I am saddened for the Reagan's loss and am very impressed with outpouring of support and love for President Reagan.

Each outgoing president develops a funeral plan. They all have the option of a state funeral, but some have not chosen it.

Given the scandal of Watergate and resulting resignation of the President, I think the lower key funeral for Nixon was appropriate.

Reagan, on the other hand, always felt he was the President of the common man (and woman). Along with his Hollywood background, I think he would have wanted both the extended periods of public viewing and the full ceremony of a state funeral.

From what I heard on the News Channels, The Nixon family requested a simple service. This was in respect of his being a Quaker. The Watergate scandal had nothing to do with it. In his later years Nixon was considered to be quite the Statesman as is Jimmy Carter.

Yes, President Nixon had great success with foreign affairs, especially with China. Hopefully, he is remembered for the good he did while in office rather than the Watergate scandal.

::yes:: I also heard this. I just want to add that Reagan's funeral was beautiful and Godspeed President Reagan.

Nixon's funeral wasn't this big, but his Presidency was different. The thing I remember about his funeral was the car alarms going off during the 21 gun salute. That was so annoying.

While Nixon did not have a state funeral, the stock markets did close in his honor.

My sister worked for the IRS and it was closed during the Nixon funeral.
