I remember hearing if the park is declared "closed" due to capacity, that you are allowed in if staying at a disney resort .

Anyone know if this is true?

You are allowed in A park but not necessarily the one you want. So if you are staying on property you are guaranteed entry into one of the 4 parks but if one is closed you are not.

There are four different phases of park close. If you are staying on-site, you will be allowed in through Phase 1, 2, and 3. When they get to Phase 4 -- which is closed to everyone, no matter what -- then no one else is let in. It's rare to get to Phase 4 close, but by that time, trust me ... you don't WANT to be in the park!

This happened to us once. We were there for the Millenium Celebration - 12/31/00 when MK and AK closed. We were able to get into MGM but it was so crowded that we were caught in a virtual sea of people and were kind of swept along. Waits were in excess of 2 hours so we just visited a few shops, went back to our hotel, had a relaxing dinner and got up extra early the next morning. We vowed never to go over the Christmas-New Year's holiday again.

not that i would want to be near a park that crowded, but out of curiousity, if it was in phase 4 could you just wait by the exit until someone left and then would they let you in the park?

Well, there are people who do it that way--- I would go chill out at the nearest resort and try back later. Usually after the afternoon parade, people start to leave, and they can reopen either completely, or at least go down a level in closures. It is done differently than you may be thinking, they don't let one person in for every person that goes out, like they do at nightclubs, etc.

How often does this happen and in what times of the year does it happen the most?

I have known several people who go over the Christmas holiday and MK or one of the other parks closing. I couldn't imagine. Iwould sit in my room and just watch Disney World shows on the TV. That is a lot of people! I have been several times in July, once in May, and once the first week of December. First week of December was by far the best because the park felt like it was all ours and the Christmas decorations were up. I could never handle being in the park with that many people.
